Dads old work knives
on: December 06, 2011, 05:31:35 PM
My dad used to be a slaughter man. When he finished that job to become a grinder his knives where put in the garage where they have been for the past 40 ish years. On a recent visit he gave me two to see what I could do with them.

Fair to say they both needed a lot of work. I decided to work on the straight on first, taking the handle off and cleaning up the metal. Not an easy job. However worth it when done. The remains of the makers mark came out. The knife had been used and sharpened that many times the edge now goes through most of the mark.

Also shown above is part of an old wooden door I kept as I thought it would come in. I next made scales from that wood.
I fancied brass pins for the handles and so made some from brass eyes I had.

Next I turned my attention to a cover. The knife is scary sharp and so I decided to make a wooden surround for the blade so as not to cut through the leather. More of the old door was used with the dremal shaping the channel. I then used some thick leather to put a top on the box. Mor dremal work neatened the whole lot up.

As the blade is kept in the box I decided to use thin leather for the rest of the cover ( yep still using the old biker leathers). The join is as you can see a buckle I got in error ages ago.

I like how this has turned out. The best part is that the entire project was completed for a new outlay of £2 (ran out of super glue).

Now to start on the interesting shaped one!

Thanks Tony, Peter
I am taking it back to my fathers tomorrow. I hope he likes it. Kind of important to get my dads approval. Like a rite of passage in a way

Quick update. My pops liked the first knife enough to allow me to use his table saw to cut more scales. He has also let me borrow this on long term loan.

This has allowed me to finish the other knife a lot quicker. Not quite finished as owing to the blade shape sharpening is proving more difficult than I expected. However nearly there.

Nice job mate. :tu:  I'm guessing that there used to be a lot more blade on both of these when new. :)

Oh yes. The cutting edge on both goes through the makers mark on both they have been sharpened that many times. However there is enough writing there to read that they where hand forged. Both have the tell tale finger print pitting from manufacture which backs this up too.

Final part of this thread for me. Finished making the sheath for the second knife. Took my inspiration from my old Saxon scram sheath from my re enactment days. The screws had to be cut to different lengths as they are on both sides. Being true to my thrifty ways the brass screws came from an old work colleague, who borrowed them from a old employer ( and yes I have lots in different dimensions). He has now sadly passed away but I think he would approve of this use for them.

I have again used wood to make a box for the knife to sit in. This time though I have just sandwiched it between two pieces of thick leather.

And with the knife beside it.
