Which would you choose?
on: December 16, 2011, 03:23:20 PM
I'm looking at two knives around the $110 range-
-Ritter Mini-grip S30V
-Spyderco caly 3 zdp-189

Which would you go for?  I like the new zdp-189 delica but they aren't much cheaper than the caly 3.

I'd go with the Caly 3 because it is totally cool looking. Also I'm not a big fan of S30V. It seems to kick my butt at sharpening. :D

Probably a Caly 3.  Spydero makes a very nice knife as we know.  The only real
issue I've had with the Benchmade knives I've bought is they've come without
a bevel and have been kind of dull out of the box. :-\

I would go with the Ritter grip. I have a caly3cf and while I love the thing, its not really a primary carry knife for me. The benchmade axis lock is much faster to open and close, which is something that generally gets factored in.
I use the caly3 mainly in situations where I specificaly do not want a knife that opens and closes lightning fast. Plus it does have a real classy look.

As for what Ash said about S30v being tough to sharpen, ZDP-189 is a bit harder so...

Given the price range I would honestly look into a Paramilitary2. While its not quite the same as an axis lock, the compression mechanism is also very quick. The para2 is probably the most knife you can get in that price range. The only problem might be blade length, since it is a bit longer than the caly3 and mini-grip.

Neither! They are both overpriced for what they are. Save yourself $50.00 and go with a regular Benchmade Mini-Grip in 154CM. The price of these steels, in these particular knives, does not justify the slight increase in edge retention.

The minigrip is a lot more stouter than caly, which has a needle point and thin edge. But as 2x said, the ritter grip may not worth the price over a regular. Caly however gives you better overall material/construction overall.

I think a big part of the appeal for the Ritter grip is the change in the blade shape and the stonewashed finish. If you are not dead set on getting those features, I would recommend going with the regular mini grip for a good bit less money.
I'm really not a huge fan of traditional backlocks as found on the Caly, that being said I do still think its a great little knife and it gets carried quite often. I just wish it had an axis lock!
Thinking about that now, imagine a Benchmade/Spyderco collaboration! It would have to be a Sypderco design incorporating the axis lock. (now I'm starting to drool...)

Well spyderco has their ball lock which is pretty similar to axis lock, but neither will fit into caly's trademark narrow frame.

Go With A Sage 1, Sage 3, Or A Manix 2.

They're All In That Price Range. Sage 1 Is s30v And Has A Simple Liner Lock. Sage 3 Is s30v Has A Cool Colored G-10 Handle And Has The Bolt Action Lock Which Is Still Similar To The Axis Lock, And The Manix 2 Has The Ball Bearing Lock And 154cm Blade Steel.

Or You Could Come Across The Latest Manix 2 Sprint Run. FFG Blade With CTS-BD30P Carpenter Steel Which Is Compared To s30v And Has A Lot Of The Same Components.
