So I got a couple of
Elephant Canes from eNasco, based on all the positive reports I heard about them, and I must say that they are excellent. The hexagonal shape is really well thought out, with a wider cut being on the front and rear edges of the cane, leaving a nice comfortable wide area for your hand during use. As well, the bottom is slightly tapered, which ends up fitting a one inch rubber cane tip perfectly.
I decided to finish them in black walnut Danish Oil, following the directions of the manufacturer, where you flood the surface every 15 to 30 minutes, until the wood is no longer adsorbing the finish, and then you wipe them down as they dry. I've never used Danish oil before, and it is quite strange how the pores will ooze stain for the next day or so, while the oil and varnish in the product hardens inside the wood.
The manufacturer says to wait 72 hours between coats, but I went one week in between, just to make sure that the finish hardens well. Here is a pic with them getting their third and final coat:

The black walnut looks very nice on the hickory, I'll post some pics when they are done.
Anyway, I'm not only going to be using these in possible defensive situations, but they will likely see most of their use as I need them for when my back goes out. And when those times come, bending over is near impossible, which leads to my needing some sort of wrist strap, or lanyard, just so I don't have to worry about it falling to the ground accidentally.
And I was wondering if anyone has some ideas on how to accomplish this? I don't want to drill a hole in the canes, and weaken them, so I was thinking of maybe a six inch paracord wrap with a lanyard loop. Or even a leather wrap with a loop.
Any ideas? Anyone done something like this before?
