I have used both and feel the Sharpmaker is easier to use well. No clamping, no guide rods to deal with like on the Lansky. Also, I think the Sharpmaker lends itself better to large and small blades. Anything from a Vic classic to a large chef knife the Sharpmaker can handle. The Lansky, not as easily. Now, the Sharpmaker has fewer angle choices than the Lanksy. So, if angle selection is important get the Lansky.

I also freehand which I highly recommend and I have an EdgePro which does an excellent job.

Best of luck with your quest,
Mike

I've not played with the Sharpmaker, but have a Lansky.  From what I have read, Mike's comments are spot on.

I will say that it seems like the Lanksy would be better if you need to reprofile your edge (assuming you get the kit with the coarse and extra coarse stones).  To do reprofiling with a Sharpmaker I've heard you need to purchase the diamond rods.

Got a Lansky and a Sharpmaker. Find the Sharpmaker easier to use.

I've got a 2rod Turnbox. Its the first time I've actually been able to sharpen a blade! The onlt thing that defeated it has been my Subcom42(but a cheap sharpener worked )

Cant comment on the Spidie, but the price put me off!
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

I'd go with a Sharpmaker, personally.  Or another turnbox type. I find the guided-type sharpeners really fiddly.

I have a Gatco (similar to Lanskey but better IMO) and a Sharpmaker.  I give the nod to the Gatco.  Multiple angles and more stone choices.  I can get my knives scary sharp on the Gatco.

Both for different reasons. I like the stones for re-profiling, and the turnbox 4 rods for touch ups, I also like the sharpmaker for touch ups. I guess its a tough choice! :/

Right... which Lansky?  Turnbox or Guided Sharpener?
The guided sharpener I believe.

Recommendations look pretty split. I had asked for a sharpmaker and she grabbed a lanskey knowing I could exchange for whatever I want anyways. I asked for the sharpmaker but hadn't considered the lanskey but now that it's here I wonder if it's the way to go anyways. Until now I've free handed my blades but it's getting to be a pain in the butt and I find serrated edges difficult. She did opt for the SE extra rod. I would really like to be able to sharpen a wide range of blade sizes such as small folders to kitchen knives. Thanks for the input so far but I'm still undecided.

Chuck Norris sharpens blades on his tongue.

I'm sure that whatever you choose will be fine :)

Meh: thanks for the feedback everyone! I gave the lanskey a whirl this afternoon after deciding a sharpmaker will be great to get for my birthday in March. I think Ashley is right in that both systems have their uses. After using the lanskey guided system I see how it will be excellent for reprofiling damaged or abused blades. It's easy to understand how a turnbox style will be nice for touch ups as well. So I choose both and feel good about it! I'm glad this is not a place where we restrict ourselves to choices when clearly more is more! Anyways I really like the lanskey guided rod system so far. I only did a Buck Groomsman to test my hand at it but really want to have a go at my work surge. I'm thinking a bench vise will be nice to use with it as well instead of sitting at a kitchen table.

It's growing on me now (the lanskey). With the guided system a dummy like me can produce a perfect edge. There are a tonne of hones available. I really like the ability to "polish" the edge. It is neither fast or convenient which is why a turnbox (sharpmaker) will still be useful.
