Case trapper amber bone CV
on: December 29, 2011, 12:32:29 AM
got this guy for christmas, my first american slipjoint. I'm really pleased with it so far. The only small flaw is a slight gap in one of the liners at the blade end of the knife.  I liked the idea of high carbon blades (Chrome Vanadium), and have been busy cutting fruit with it and sticking it into potatoes (said the actress to the  bishop  :P), to get a patina on it.

That is one pretty knife. I have a red bone version and I absolutely love it. Case knives are hard to beat.  :tu:

With some of the newer slippie companies here in the states some have lost interest in case. I have always and still do prefer case slippies over other american companies. I love CV also.

which ones are those? do you mean Great Eastern or is there some other cool company I don't know about? I thought I'd start with Case, seeing as that's the most popular. Would like to get one of the GEC ones one day, seeing as they seem to be the current benchmark for quality.

Nice, I like trappers. Case manages decent quality without being too expensive.

Also have a look at their Sodbusters; real classics.

For lower priced knives with good quality also try the Rough Rider makes.

...and get some older US knives in Carbon Steel made by Schrade, Camillus, Case etc. They are sweet and generally inexpensive.

I was actually thinking of going for some older U.S. made Schrade knives, there seem to be enough of them on U.S. ebay. It'll have to wait till I'm back from holidays though. I think the size of the knife is perfect, I thought it might be too big or heavy, but I hardly notice it in the pocket.
I was going to get a Carl Schlieper sodbuster at one stage, but never got around to it.

Jmora,

Very nice #54 pattern Trapper. For standard 4 1/8" Trappers Case makes one of the best. If you like that pattern style also check out Queen Cutlery, they make a nice one as well, and in D2 Tool Steel in a few handle materials....

As well as a more inexpensive line in 1095 carbon steel and in a few different handle materials......

Queen also builds some nice ones for the Moore Maker line in 1095 carbon steel.....

@2xtap
those queen knives look great, especially that bone/stag(?) one at the top. I'll probably go for some sort of stockman pattern next though, everyone needs one of them, maybe queen or GEC.
Could you tell me something about the Tony Bose Case knives - as I understand it, some are actual custom knives made by him, and have a custom price, and others are patterns designed by him, but made by case, with a more expensive price than usual, but not in custom territory. Is the fit and finish of the latter a lot better than the normal cases?

Jmora,

There are patterns in the regular Case line up that are Tony Bose but made in regular Case fashion like their Sowbelly pattern and the Backpocket. Now the higher end actual Tony Bose line of premium slipjoints that run in the couple hundred dollar range are actually made in the Case Custom shop.....they are custom quality pieces designed from Tony Bose patterns he makes himself, but these are not actually made by him. Their quality is quite a ways up above regular Case production runs. But you pay for that increased level of F&F.
