Another sharpening question.
on: December 30, 2011, 04:50:00 AM
Is there anything to reference when wanting to find the proper angle to sharpen a knife. What I am looking for is a list of different knife models and its blade angle from the factory.

Factory edge are done by hand so they vary greatly from one to the other, but most tend to fall between 35° and 45° I'd say.

I was thinking it would be 25-35 degrees.

Not in my experience, I've had maybe 1 knife that will work with 30° setting on sharpmaker, and quite a few that are so obtuse 40° doesn't touch the edge.

I think Spyderco claims a 30 degree inclusive from factory.

All my Spydercos have been 30. Best thing is to do the Sharpie-on-the-edge trick so you know what/where you're hitting on the edge when sharpening.

From My experience most knives are 30 unless they are choppers and then you can go with a straight 40. Also you can do a primary bevel of 40 and then follow up with a secondary of 30 and finish it off with some 2000 - 2500 grit sand paper on a mouse pad to give it a nice appleseed shape this will make it hair popping sharp.
