I was digging in an old box and found something I had used as a letter opener years ago. However, after looking at it once again, it probably isn't a letter opener simply because of the quality of the item.
The blade is square and thick but comes to a very sharp point. There is a nice little hand guard, and a well made wooden handle. The tang is solid and not welded. It is also substantial with a thread at one end which fits the threaded end cap very nicely.
I had bought this at a yard sale ages ago for a song and a dance. I used it as a letter opener for many years...not sure why as the blade is quite thick and square...making it not the best at paper parting.

The blade does have a mark. It states that the blade is stainless steel, and that it is made in Japan. I have looked online with no success for the manufacturers mark, which is a "JR" inside a crown.

Any idea what this is, or what it was used for, or who made it, etc?
I can't seem to find anything online.
