The Mouser (Gerber EAB Mod)
on: January 06, 2012, 01:54:22 AM
A quickie mod for the sewing kit.

I had an idea after seeing some carpet cutting blades at Canadian Tire, I can use those to rip open seams! But the massive blade holders be too large to get any kind of dextrous manipulation. Then came the Gerber EAB (exchange-a-blade), the smallest (at least that I know of) blade holder.

The blade swap is hardly a mod, the real mod is the addition of grip and a thumbstud.

When open, the jimping is nice under the thumb and allows for control of the narrow edge hook blade when cutting open seams.

I added a tiny row of jimping on the liner lock, it was a little slippy too.

Why The Mouser? It reminds me of the Ninja Turtle Mouser:

If they did, who else would we make fun of at MTO?

I don't know why I didn't think of it before...I wish it came in BO or at least painted black...

Thank You Metropolicity,  that tool is exactly what I need to have in my tool kit for removing the sheathing from electric cables. Even I can manage to do that mod.

Thank You Metropolicity,  that tool is exactly what I need to have in my tool kit for removing the sheathing from electric cables. Even I can manage to do that mod.

It was super easy, I used a dremel small diamond round file to get the spacing correct then used a small 1/8" round file and went slow to get the depths right.

The jimping on the liner lock is done with the dremel only.

The thumb stud is a little bit more difficult, you could replace the screw with a hex but I find it a little too far down (unless you have monkey length thumbs). I used a solid carbid end mill to drill through the top layer only. I made the thumb stud out of aluminum rod on my lathe and press fit it into place.

Hope that helps with your future mod :)

Just an idea for you metro, if you don't want it silver, you should get a small gun bluing kit to use on it. I think would look really good and it would be a lot more difficult to scratch off than paint.

Cowabunga dude!  Got any pizza?

That's a really neat mod btw.  One of the reasons why I don't use my EAB much is because of the lack of grip.  :-\  I may need to dig out my EAB now...

Necro posting!

I received an EAB for my work bag and I was browsing the boards for a pic of a jimped one I thought I had seen here. I guess I found the thread, but w/o pics. Does anybody still have a pic saved somewhere? Metro, maybe got a Minute to spare from sewing Skinths?
anybody else modded the EAB to "less slippery" and "grippier"?
