I finally had enough of hand finishing my custom springs, so I did some research and blew 300 on a heavy duty vibratory tumbler and some ceramic media.  Time to experiment and figure out how to make parts look nice.  I know I need burnishing fluid and water to drip in the top at a slow rate, and the tumbler has a drain, so I'll have to rig up some bucket and value system.

(Image removed from quote.)

My vibratory tumbler was backordered  ??? ... BUT.. its now on truck out for delivery!  OH how I hope this makes parts finishing faster.  The longest task in my current mod process is finishing the springs.   It take me about an hour by hand to turn a heat treated spring covered in scale, so a shiny nice spring ready to use.

Nice!
It will be interesting to see how much time it will save you, hopefully a lot.

Agreed. That seems like a lot of time could be saved that way. Hope it works to your satisfaction.

Now to experment... there are lots of variables.

- drip rate of burnishing liquid
- tumble time
- media type (although i only have ceramic type right now)
- media shape

I want to get some of the little pyramid type too, but this place didnt have any.  They also sell the bowls separately, I assume so once you know what you need, you have one bowl for each media type you use.

Just wanted to mention that I finally got all my custom examples pics up in my site gallery.

http://sakmodder.com/gallery_93mm_alox_1.shtml

This has been an easier way for people to browse and refer to specific models, than sifting through either my photobucket or my massive build thread here.

It took me a ridiculously long time to get all those pics organized.  But Ive also been on 3yr old watching duty since my wife is working full time now.  So when I cant be in the shop, I was forcing myself to work away at that.  Id much rather be out grinding, cutting and polishing metal though than doing computer work.  I dont have too much left to do on it now, just post of common build configurations and options.

Then if I want to re-learn javascript I want to make a design you own SAK tool and submit for quote.  That would streamline the process too.

Interestingly the number of hits to the site by country, almost exactly line up with where Ive sent custom SAKs and in what order.  The US and Great Britain are by far the most common places Ive sent SAKs.  The only one that doesnt correspond in the list is France.  I cant remember ever sending a SAK there, but I know there are a few french SAK enthusiast sites that probably view my customs.

That's some great custom SAK viewing Syph.  Good job organizing all that.  I like the idea of the "build your own" feature and submitting for a quote :tu:

This one seemed straight forward but I hit a bunch of snags on the way.  Pliers are harder to add than scissors since they stick up higher and can block nail nicks.  In the middle this blocked other tools, and pliers on the outer layer are difficult as the plier jaw rivet sticks out and will hit the scale.

You cant tell from the pics but here are the tweaks I did to get it all to work.

- ground plier head rivet to clear scale
- ground rests of plier back spring to allow plier head to sit as low as possible
- ground rest of saw backspring to lower saw as it was too high.
- surface ground 2x opener layers springs from 0.080" to 0.055" to use as the phillips backspring

But.. It all works just fine and the pliers open and close without hitting the scale at all.   :tu:

I was playing with a 1/2 inch endmill today to see if that works for making nail nicks.  I think it did a decent enough job.   :tu:

Robert,
I love what you did with this "chopped" knife blade - literally making an electrician look-alike blade. I can see how this can be applied to blade with broken tips, and/or mixing with other short tools on the same layer (with appropriate washers/spacers).  :tu:

Great idea, and it turned out excellent. That would make a perfect detail knife. One of the best features of 91mm SAK's (IMHO) is the handle to small blade ratio for precise cutting, but that is even better. :tu:
