Tonight I made some good progress on another new mod for me.  Similar to Bushidos Alox deluxe tinker, but with a small blade nested with the large.

I have all the hardware parts prepped, and I hand made 3 brass liners for this beauty.

This is the first time I put Red HA scales with polished brass liners, and when I put them together I thought, wow this is pretty.  I really like the look of it and I think brass is going to find its way more often into the liner rotation.

I just have to do the pin splice trick and I can assembly this tomorrow.  There is alot of backspring there so I hope it won't be too tough to get the pins popped in place.

Cheers

Dark red and shiny brass/gold colour really gives a luxurious feel. Similar to dark blue and silver.

If only there was a way to give the tools the same brass colour, you'd have Iron Man's SAK :).

I got this red scaled beauty together tonight.  I wont lie and say it was easy.. it took alot of fiddling and custom washer making and test fitting.  I'm darn happy with the outcome though!  :D

I love the brass!  When I get some spare time I'm going to make up a bunch more brass liners.

This has a Titanium keyring spacer, a regular one wouldn't be strong enough to hold the weight of this beefy SAK.

The tool loadout I tried in a bunch of different orientations, but in the end I was happiest with the way Vic does it with pliers and scissors opening the same way, opposite the main knife.  The other ways didn't look as esthetically balanced IMO.  All the tools are easily accessible and everything has good snap.

Cheers!

Damn, look at that.  :o Trifles make perfection and perfection is no trifle.

Seems like only yesterday that Syph was messaging me asking about torx pins and polishing inside pivot holes. I'd respond with all the details because he seemed to "get it" and would turn right around and do it just as well or better than I do. He did the 91mm to 84mm scissor mod all on his own and I still haven't even tried to work that one out yet. For the first time yesterday I had to refer a customer to him for that because I'd never done it.

I'm so proud. (sniff)

I've been working on the cadet with scissors mod for awhile now, so I finally put together the prototype.

It works great and the scissors have a hefty snap.  These are scissors from a 91mm SAK that I modified to fit on the 84 mm frame, since finding 84mm scissors now is pretty rare.

I sanded down some standard button head screws to make them as flat as possible, but I think I will try to countersink some small ones next.  I like to try to make them as flush as I possibly can.

Since the 84mm scales are thinner than 93mm scales I gave the pivot the maximum amount of scale to pivot on for strength, but I think I can split the different and have the pivot extend 1/32 inch into the scale and use the rest of the scale to sink the screw into.

You really got me thinking now. Would a 93 awl fit in a cadet to make a small urban pioneer?

Somewhere a few pages back in this thread I have a picture of the awl on an 84.  It doesnt fit well, but I think if I reprofiled the part that engages the spring to be narrower to match the smaller 84mm toolset then yes it should fit just right.

I didn't think that I came up with that on my own. I looked back at it that is what I was remembering. What about an Electrician blade in place of a can opener? Maybe with a thumb stud to use for quick opening all the mod packages coming to my hose from Canada.

Quick update to my super cadet (what would the proper name be anyhow, cadet plus?).  I didnt like the first type of screws I used so I ground down some countersink ones and got those to fit nice.  Looks better I think  :D

Springs!  :ahhh

Hot off the laser, 222 custom springs for scissors or pliers depending on how thick they're ground and how high that little rest bump is ground down. They're looking pretty gnarly now but they'll have it even worse once they get into the heat treat oven. They'll be tempered to around 45 Rc and then on to be surface ground to 2 different thicknesses Each one will be hand fitted and polished as it gets installed.

As compared to a Solo spring. Plenty of extra meat on the rest riser to be ground down to the perfect height as each one gets hand fitted. Same with the ramp. Notice how they slope up from the center pivot to the working end so the thumb lever of the scissors or pliers can slide right up that ramp and close gently as they snap shut rather than hitting that bump like on the blade and saw springs we've been using.

Soon there will be no more buying 2 Farmers to get the saw springs for pliers or a Pioneer or Solo to get a blade spring for scissors. We want to make these mods as affordable as possible so everybody can enjoy one.  :D

I'm starting to really dig the Cadet too. School me on the tools. Do they have the same can opener as 91 and 93 with a 91 cap lifter or their own size cap lifter? Their own size blade or are they squeezing a 91 blade in there? I know Vic likes to make as few parts as possible and I'm  wondering how many are exclusive to the 84mm size.

007 Cadet  :D
It should have a tracking device, a laser and a magnet for deflecting bullets.

I swear someday I'm going to make this thing real,

It looks like it already has my titanium magnifying glass.
