Don't give INTUIT your email addy!
on: January 16, 2008, 08:21:03 PM
Don't give Intuit your email addy! I d/l and registered my copy of their Simple Start 2008 just a few days ago. They're the ONLY site/company that I've given my business email addy to and now I'm getting spam out the wazzoo. This is blatant spam and doesn't appear to be coming thru Intuit at all. smurfs!  :twak: This seriously P's me off. Before anyone asks, yes I declined all offers of solicitation and updates. I usually give my "don't care" email addy if I need to but for this s/w I figured I'd give them by business email. Aaarrgh!  >:(

I have a Hotmail addy that I put on just about everything.  In fact, I have one legitimate Hotmail address and three MSN Messenger accounts, and sometimes I'll list one of the MSN accounts that doesn't have a Hotmail account paired with it.

I wouldn't be so quick to blame Intuit; most spam comes from people who have your email address and have had their computers compromised.

I have my own personal domain, and only ever give out one address (mail@mydomain.co.uk), but I get spam all the time to "randomletters@mydomain.co.uk". Most of it is actually from companies saying that mail I sent them hasn't got through their spam filters... messages that have been sent by spammers masking their own address with mine.

Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about it. Some other plonker got a virus and I'm paying the price. I'm all for adding a 0.2p "idiot" tax to all email; maybe that would make people take more precautions online!

Email spam isn't a problem, you just spend a few minutes deleting it every morning and get on with life.

Now Phone spam is a problem! You can hang up and they just keep calling back, and unlike Emails, if you're busy with Phone Spam, genuine phone calls are getting blocked!

Sometimes you tell yourself that they're just doing their job, that those poor Indians named "Scott" need to call me continuously so they can get afford food for their families...but then they INHUMANLY call you back, repeating the same spiel over and over again, refusing to answer any actual questions, just delivering their lines louder over your protests.

Levi,

I know it was from Intuit because only minutes later I started getting spam. In all the time I've had this email addy I've never, not one time, gotten spam. Coincidence? I doubt it.

Nomad,

Here in the USA we have national "Do Not Call" listings. I placed myself on the "Do not call" list(s) about three or four years ago. The only calls I now get are from not-for-profits, which are supposedly allowed to disregard the DNC lists. I know some people that still get phone solicited even though they're on the DNC list(s). I forget how, but supposedly you can complaint about those calls and the company can get fined for it. I haven't done that though so I'm really clueless about that.  Hey, do what my one buddy does and tell the idiot(s) you're burning your meal and you need to put the phone down for a second... then just make them wait. :D
