Unknown US Dagger
on: June 28, 2012, 09:19:28 PM
I happen to have this old dagger without any marks on it, but in a quality sheath marked Hamley & Co. Pendleton, Oregon.
Google told me that this is a well known saddlemaker, and  but i have no idea who made the knife.
The dagger seems very well made, with broad double edge carbon steel blade and a leather washer handle with thick brass guard & pommel.
I've already posted this on a few other forums and contacted Hamley & Co, and i hope to hear at least something back.
Any idea's here ?

Specs:

Overall length: 11.6 inches (29,5 cm)
Blade length: 7.1 inches (18,0 cm)
Blade thickness: 0.3 inches (6,85 mm)
Steel: carbon steel
Handle material: leather washers (with a few brass ones)
Guard: brass (thickness: 6,25 mm)
Pommel: brass
Weight: 385 grams
Sheath: Leather

Call me crazy , but it might have been a Vietnam Era competitor to the Randall . No markings on the Knife ? If no markings , I'd say a very talented backyard mechanic .

It definitely looks like there might be some Randall influence.  It looks like a good size for a combat knife.  It also looks like a piece you wouldn't be afraid to carry and use.

What the knife lacks in the finishing department is more than made up by the extremely solid construction, and i don't think it was made by some Joe with a hammer.
This knife is all business, and it's got a very well made sheath to accompany it.

This is what BillDeShivs said about it on another forum:

"I see nothing crude about it. The blade is nicely ground, and the handle well constructed. It was made by a knifemaker, not an amateur. Unfortunately, I can't help with the origin."

And this was Bernard Levine's reply after some said it was probably homemade:

"Not all home-made knives are crude.

Many custom knifemakers work at home. The vast majority, in fact.

The saddle maker might be able to date the stamp.
But I can tell you that the scabbard is 1940s or later in construction.
"

Haven't received a reply from Hamley & Co yet,

Might have come from a Master Machinist's mate on a ship . A very high end "Theater Knife " . Looks like whoever made it had at least seen a Randall #2 .
