Why a brass pin on the Spirit scissors?
on: February 11, 2012, 07:21:11 PM
I searched and found nothing about this: Why does the Swisstool Spirit use a brass pin on the scissors?

I REALLY doubt it is brass, phosphorous bronze maybe.  Mine on my Silver original model does not look like either (nor on the BO S version).  How about some pictures or more information on exactly what model you're talking about and why you think it is brass?

It's a Spirit X. The pin holding the scissors is brass colored. So I figured it's either brass, or bronze.

I have Swisstool RS that has a steel pin in the scissors, and  Vic SAK scissors use steel pins. The Spirit is the only one that's different and I was wondering why.

I can't check my Spirit-X right now, it might be something new. A Phosphor bronze or other bronze alloy would likely be great as it is very strong and very low friction. It has many other ideal mechanical properties. This would be great.

Makes sense to me. 91mm Vics have had what looks to be a brass rivet in the scissors starting a year or so ago. Like you say, hard to photograph but they sure look brass to me.

!

I checked my 91mm SAKS and the newest one DOES have a brass pin, but the older 91mms have steel pins.  I wonder why they changed it?

Well that's an interesting development. :tu:  My Spirit X is a little over a year and a half old and has a plain old steel pin.

I'm betting Phosphor Bronze, or similar, alloy. Ideal material for pivot that needs to be strong and last. Should allow for tighter tolerances in the joint. Nice discovery!

Just checked all my Victorinox scissors:

Huntsman: brass colored
Explorer: brass colored
Swisschamp Black: brass colored
Swisschamp Red: steel
Spirit Road Tour: brass colored
Signature Lite: steel

All of these were bought in the first half of 2011  ;).

Nice!  I know I have not been paying as much attention lately, but I must have been sleeping to miss this.  Here is a recent Huntsman scissor pivot.

I bought it new, around July 2011

and for the record, I'm not pleased about this change.

I have noted the "brass colored" pivot on the 91mm earlier this year, when I got a CT34.

Any why is that, is that because you are assuming it is brass?  Have you had any problem with it?  I would expect it to be a bronze alloy and it would be a nice improvement.  With a life time warranty I'm sure they would not have made a change that is not beneficial.

I'm sure brass or bronze alloy is fine, but stainless steel  is better.

from what  I read about bronze alloys, they work better for friction points, and have a measure of corrosion resistance (unlike brass which oxidizes). And while a stainless steel pivot is
more durable, maybe it's hardness might wear the scissors down?  I really don't know.

While I don't have a technical opinion about that, aesthetically having all inox parts looks better, imo.

Is Wenger also doing this?

If not, then I have one more reason to give a Wenger a try.

It could be oil impregnated brass. They would never require lubrication. This has been around for 70-80 years.
