Bits: yes they are made of some kind of reinforced chalk. Replace them. I did that for the one just sold to a member.

As for the torque question... So far so good. Because of the increased reach, angles and grip you are able to get a lot more torque with less effort. For that reason i'm being careful until I know the tool better.

So far its a fantastic tool. I prefer my black model with plain edge.

I haven't had any issues with the stock bits. I use the #2 Phillips daily for various tasks and it's showing no significant wear...

Reinforced chalk huh?  I've had bits like that in the past!

The screwdriver bits on my Select Fire don't seem all that bad, but then I haven't yet used them for much so I really can't say.  So far there's more reinforcement than chalk though so I guess I'm doing ok!  :D

I did get it today and thank you very much. This tool is the perfect compliment to the others that I EDC in a Maxped "Fatty". It seems durable enough and I appreciate that you upgraded the bits for me. Overall I'm very pleased with the tool and the transaction as I have been with every other transaction I've done on this site.

I was just looking around the interwebs, and realised someone should do a side by side comparison of the Select Fire and the Leatherman E55B. Should be a fairly close match.

I'm not investing $100 in buying one locally (yes, Leatherman in Australia is stupidly expensive - that's the cheapest price I could find) and I'm not running the customs gauntlet, and it might be a multitool, but it looks like a knife and I'm sure they'd very kindly throw it in the bin for me...
Just got my selectfire today! I really like it so far. Later this weekend I'll do a selectfire vs e55bx shootout.

Stay multi my friends

I got one of these at Walmart around Christmas last year for $10.  The design is interesting and the drivers work pretty well.  I'd say it's about as much knife as I've ever gotten for that price.

I finally got one too, and it looks/feels decent enough, but I'm kinda bummed that it's not paracord lanyard friendly, lol...

I had a select fire for about a month before I sold it.

It was to heavy and I couldn't get used to the tip down clip.

It did seem like a quality tool it just wasn't for me.

I have tied a simple lanyard onto the Kershaw Select Fire's pocket clip, with the other adjustable end looped onto a belt loop, running the belt through the loop, or around the wrist if needed... :)

Those are nice pics, there Stormdrane.

This is officially the first tool ijust bought because of a thread here, so i think i have to say thanks for some more money spent and some more strange looks from her.  ;)

I´m not yet sure if this is a good team buddy for a plier based tool for those moments where you need to hold a nut and turn a screw or just to bulky t carry alongside a Multi.

Price was a whloe lot more than 10 $, as most Multi/Knife brands seem to add a premium here in germany.

I´ve bought the black plain edged variant. Fit and finish seems good enough, me thinks.

And a thought for the modders around:
What if you removed teh 2 bolts at the tail, opened up teh holes enough for a lanyard hole and do  new holes and threads for teh screws at the little hump , about in an axis with the swiveling point of teh bit holders? That way the handles should stay firm and you could use a lanyard. It would be close to the edges tip, but on mine it looks ok to enlargen teh holes a bit.

Because of this thread I just picked up a plain edge select fire for $12 shipped to satisfy my curiosity.

To be honest I did not expect to like this one much, but I was very pleasantly surprised.  It's very nice considering the price and steel type.  I think it's actually worth more than I paid, which I dont say too often.  The long driver reach is a delight and a welcome addition to an otherwise regular folding knife.

I've actually got a mod planned for it already and I will be taking it apart later to fiddle.   ;)

It's funny about thus one- how many people got it just to see what it was like and ended up really appreciating it!

I just wanted to add that i did buy a second one. This time teh blue handled version with black liners and hardware.
I did take both apart and now have one "tacticool tool-knife" with a half serrated edge and black liners, handles and hardware and a blue scaled one with silver hardware wnd liners.

I think both versions have won in this operation.

Now i am thinking of either getting a fitting tap to relocate the screw at the rear to the bottomcorner or changing all threads to M3 and doing so and enlarging the rear thread to about 4 mm to have a lanyard hole.

I just started taking mine apart, but the main blade pivot only has a torx screw on one side, rivet head on the other, so it just spins when I turn it.  I dont get how this is supposed to come apart.

On one of mine it was a threaded pivot with a screw without any slot on one side and a torx on the other, the other knife had a pivot with a flat end and a screw with a torx head, i managed to loosen both. On one i pressed my thumb on the other side, the other came loose when i flipped the blade open and put some lateral (?) load on it so it would produce more friction on teh pivot.

I've got one in each color. The ones sold at Wal-Mart are all partially-serrated, so I got mine (plain edged) from the local knife shop. Also, the ones at my local Wal-Mart have a drop-point blade like the blue one in lowtech's photo, not the clip point shown in the first post. I gave my daughter one and it rides in her "woods bag".

They were indeed hard to beat for $10. I'd say they'd be a hell of a deal at twice that price.

How about the $50 before postage that they go for in Oz  :o :( :( :(.
I would give one of these a go in no time BUT I believe Oz customs would seize one bought from over seas as they fail their stupid 'flick knife' test & I can not bring myself to spend $60 on a $10-$15 tool  :( :(.

How does Kershaw make any $ on them at $10 a pop  ??? ???

I don't think it's a matter of kershaw losing money. Retail is something like $40. It's actually worth that but Walmart decides they want to clear out inventory, at cost or a loss. They just want u in the store. If you come for the crazy cheap deal, chances are you buy other stuff. They make their money, trust me.

I would say the Select Fire is worth $50.  I'd strongly consider it at that price.
