Steel type in Powerassist
on: January 20, 2012, 09:57:26 PM
I know that in LM they use 420HC, 154CM, and other types of steels but I cannot find anywhere nothing about the steel used in blades on a SOG Powerassist. Could anyone tell me that?
Thanks.

That would be my guess as well.  There's nothing about it on SOG's website but most multitools are made with non-premium fancy steels as they tend to be more abused than pocket or tactical and softer steels stand up to abuse better.

Here's a nice WIKI link with the different steels listed and their uses: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAE_steel_grades

Thanks for posting that- it looks really interesting.  I'll have to spend some time reading through it when I have a chance.   :tu:

Most of the steel info I have is directly related to the knife industry, and much of that is from various manufacturers, all of whom feel their special blend is the best and everyone else's are too crappy to cut rotten bananas.

The only MT manufacturer I know of that offers specialty steel is Leatherman.  The S30V blade on the Charge TTi is a special metallurgical powdered steel with incredible properties.  It's about the best you can get.  Of course specialty steel like that is going to push up the price of the knife.  I have to say though that I've used the TTi for the same stuff I've used the SOG on and I have noticed a big difference.  That said, I think the stainless on the SOG is good enough for an inside opening blade.  If you are really concerned carry a high quality folder like a Spyderco.  Even the TTi doesn't beat having a separate folder when you really need one.
