recommendations for miniature slipjoint?
on: February 24, 2012, 03:57:32 PM
I'd like a really small traditional american slipjoint. Not sure why , smaller knives are just neat I suppose. Anyway, at the moment, the case peanut seems like a good choice. But maybe there is something else cooler that I haven't thought of yet, some other brand/pattern...

Not exactly traditional, but check out AG Russell's Ultimate Penknife. I keep one in my wallet

The good thing about the Case Peanut line is that you have so many scale options.  I love my Peanut in black G10. :tu:

How about a  Camillus  or Schrade USA stockman?(top two pictures)

Lighter, thinner and prettier than a case peanut.. (last two pictures)

Indeed; while the RR may not last as long as a Case, durability-wise, it's still good value for the money.

+1 Rough Riders are great knives for the money.  I like them especially to try out patterns before I commit to buying a Case or the like.  Even then, they have a place in my collection.

I like the original schrade (before it closed and sold to whomever) old timer's. They had nice carbon steel and made in USA. Also, the Bucks are nice. Nothing wrong with Case if you prefer stainless

Case also does the peanut and many other patterns in carbon steel, look for CV following the pattern number.  The CV steel takes and keeps a great edge, and I haven't had ANY issues with rust and the like.  Just a quick wipe down at the end of the day and a bit of oil every now and then.  I've been using my Mini Trapper and Sodbuster Jr, both in CV, at work a lot lately and absolutely love them.  I like Case's Tru-Sharp stainless as well though.

thanks for the recommendations. I think I'll keep an eye on ebay for a US made Schrade, and you're right, there is plenty of variety in the case peanut line. I like that brushed steel finish of hte g10 version, maybe also if there is one from the '70s going... my poor wallet
