I had a Shop Vac go up not once but twice on two different occasions while cleaning my pellet stove! You think i would have learned the first time. Now i have a vac. that is for cleaning stoves. Never happened while doing my coal stove thankfully as it is harder to get outside. As for fire extinguishers i have Halon.

I did have a vacuum cleaner explode on me, when I sprayed a bit too much WD-40 in it, trying to get the motor to work smoothly. (Works with car alternators)...

The main reason I am against powder ones at home is that the mess/damage they create usually ends up being more costly than the fire damage you prevented. You end up with sticky powder everywhere.

If you have a huge fire then by all means use a powder one; however to extinguish a frying pan it may not be worth destroying your kitchen.

Agreed; the problem is that you don't really know where the line is for this except in hindsight. When I was a lad my youngest brother got ahold of matches from a recent camp-out and was playing with them in my room. The resulting flames were successfully fought with a powder extinguisher, but if time had been spent trying to knock the relatively small fire down first by other means it might have been too late. I was quite content to deal with the residue and ruined bed/carpet, as it meant we hadn't lost the house.

Not to derail the fire extinguisher thread but maybe to alleviate this whole situation in the future it might be a good idea to get a "Chinese Hat" to cover the top of your (stove pipe) chimney. As tempered glass, heat, and water do not get along and seams to be what started this whole problem. One drop of water on hot piece of tempered glass can cause it to shatter.

I have one of those but when the wind hits hard enough it drives the rain up inside and down the chimney.
