Spreading the love
on: March 20, 2012, 10:47:05 PM
About two weeks ago, a buddy of mine came over with some great news:  He'd gotten himself a new job.  They required him to purchase a knife and a tool setup for work, though.  He wanted my advice on a multi and/or a folder.  I let him play with some of my tools, and he settled of the Wingman.  When he asked where he could get one, I told him not to bother, take the one I have.  I've known him for over 25 years, and it's not like he's never done me any favors.  Yesterday he called me, all excited.  The pliers and the Phillips had saved the day on a piece of equipment, and he wanted to thank me. :)  I told him I was glad to help.  Meanwhile, my boss' old Tough Tool finally died, and he's playing around with one of my BO MP600s.  I have two identical ones, so pretty sure I'll have only one soon.  And my Tinker, Super Tinker, and Evo 16 are in another friends' hands, he wants a SAK for work and couldn't decide exactly what he's looking for, and asked my opinion.  Easier to let him try them out than hear my opinion.  I figure that if even one of these guys buys another tool, I'll have done my part as an enabler!  >:D

I have great friends that often help me with different projects and would feel insulted if I offered them pay.I buy a lot of Saks on Ebay and my joy is restoring them to like new condition. They usually just end up in a drawer so I decided gifting these to my friends was a good way to show my appreciation.I was showing a friend one of the two Moras I just received and he was impressed.I told him one was for me and one for him.He was both shocked and happy.Just my sneaky way of giving back.

Well, my boss decided that he wanted the MP600.  For the past two hours now at the store, all I've been hearing are OHO pliers being flicked open, accompianied by a bit of a giggle  :).  The simple pleasures in life.......

Good show.  :salute:

I just bought a Tool Logic SL Plier from a big knife seller on eBay...only to find that the photo (old version with folding drivers) was not what I got. I got a carbon copy of the new version with bit driver...sigh.

Instead of asking for a refund, etc, I will keep the item and gift it as the prize for tonight's archery league Bingo game. This will be the second item to go this way. The first was a CRKT Tool-Zilla Jr.  :D

It is, isn't it?  A while ago I gave a friend my old Tinker when his Chinese knock off broke opening a bottle (!).  He carries it every day now.  It's a nice feeling to know that these tools are appreciated and are going to be used like they should.

You're a good man Tom.

I gave a buddy of mine a Blast two years ago, and a Spartan soon after.  He carries them both every day.  I love seeing him use them.  He won't buy any on his own for some reason but at least I got him started with some decent stuff.

I took a selection of SAK's, swisstools and a couple of Leathermans to work today for a colleage to take a look at as he was thinking of buying a tool of some description. He didn't get anything the same as mine but liked my SAK Forester but wanted scissors so ordered an Outrider online.

I guess that sort of makes me an enabler as well?!?

My boss has been learning about good knives and multis from me over the years.  He always appreciated a good knife and/or tool but was never really familiar with the different brands and features until I came along.  He's developing a hefty collection thanks to me.  :D

He plans to order some Dime's and Photon Protons and some full sized tools from Travis, but his recent vacation got in the way of him ordering any sooner.  I gave him the all black Dime I got from Travis yesterday as an advance toy to play with until he gets around to pacing his order.  Thanks to the tools I loaned him over a few weeks he's getting a Spirit for his wife, a Powerlock for his son and a Charge TTi for himself,

I need to loan tools out more often!  :D

I'm going to be doing the same thing on Saturday for one of the guys at the store, he wants to buy a multi but isn't sure what to get.  He already has a Tinker (wonder where that suggestion came from   :D?)  I figure I'll bring my MP450 and 600, Wave, Blast, and Kick and let him play a bit.

I've converted one guy at the boatyard to the joys of a pocket knife. He originally wanted one but didn't know what, so I convinced him to get a Swisschamp  >:D Several weeks later I asked him how he was getting on with it and he loved it ... but he wasn't carrying it  :-\ ... he was just laving it at the boat. Much rib poking and patronising later he was convinced he needed to carry a knife so I gifted him a Solingen made SAKalike. A few months after that he asked me to get him another. I asked what and why, and he said the Swisschamp lived at the boat but was too large for pocket carry, and the one I gave him lived in his work trousers. He'd decided he wanted a "real" SAK for his normal attire to save forgetting to switch the knife over when he changed.

I got a Compact and a Evo14 and took them both to him, left them with him a couple of days, and told him to give me one of them back once he'd decided which suited him best. He returned the Wenger which I quickly gifted to my brother. Next step ... pliers based tools  >:D

The same brother is also the owner of that LM CS4 I spent ages ranting about (it scarred my mind that thing  :P ) and he absolutely loves it ... but then he doesn't know any better really, even though I showed him all the reasons why I was letting it go  :D. The juice lives in his rucksack (and I'm safe in the knowledge he's legal), and the Evo14 is in his pocket pretty much every day if he isn't carrying his faux stag handled Sheffield made lambsfoot slippie. I just need to sort him out with a decent light at some point ... and teach him how to sharpen. He just gives me a   blade with a nice radius on the edge every so often at the moment and I resurrect it for him

I gave a coworker a Leatherman Micra some time back.

I got a friend a two-pack with a Gerber Clutch and Shortcut in it for her birthday.

I'm trying to figure out if there's anything I could convince my hubby to switch to, but he's pretty well stuck with his SAK classic. Admittedly, it's a little tough to beat, ounce for ounce, for someone with an office job.

I gave my wife my old PS4 and she loves it, though I wouldn't say she's mad about MT's or SAK's like any of us are.  So now she has a Quark AA XPG R4, a PS4, and a Byrd Robin all in her purse now because of me.

Well, the giving continues  :).  Today at work I brought a couple of tools to show one of the guys.  After playing with them he told me he liked "that one", pointing at my Fuze.  He then asked where he could buy one when he had some money to spare.  I'm now short one Fuze and he can keep his cash in his wallet.  :tu:  The way I see it, I got the Fuze as an extra in a trade, and it was just sitting around.  If he can put it to good use, so be it.

Seems like no-one is immune to the Gerber flick-syndrome. >:D

Very good of you sorting out your friends.  Thinking about it, while I've given out a good few SAKs over the years, I don't think I've ever done the same with a pliers based MT. :-[  Might have to find someone deserving.
