'Bare Necessities' SAK mod - modder needed
on: March 19, 2012, 11:41:22 AM
In need of a modder for this mod.

4 layer SAK on a 91mm scale:

1) Scissors
2) Pliers
3) Cybertool bit driver

4) And the fourth layer (if it can be done) - end opening awl and file/metal saw

In terms of scale material - cellidor would do, but I would be willing to pay extra for a some bone/horn/wood.

Any takers?

You might be able to put an awl on the back of the file, but i don't think inline would work.

Rahmed just showed in the 'show your mods' thread that it slots right into a 91mm frame in line with the knife blade, so I am hoping it can fit with the file as well.

The knife blade is curved and gets skinnier at the end. This allows some thick tool to be hinged at the opposite. The knife blade is offset also. The file is centered and is the same thickness throughout the length of the blade. I wouldn't know how to get it to work. Maybe someone else here does.

it might fit, it would be close.  I dont have a file on hand to try for you.  Perhaps if the file was curved just a bit it would go in.

Thanks Syph, it would be very interesting since if that works, that kind of dual tool layer could work with other stuff opposite the awl as well, depending on personal taste/need.

If it works with a small blade than it should work with all others such as combo-tool etc

Thanks Santos, I am very glad to find out it has been done, since it means the config I want can be done with minimal hassle.

So still searching for one of the very gifted modders to accept this project, should be a quickie...

Hmm, would it be possible to have scissors and the end opening awl in one layer?

Hmm, would it be possible to have scissors and the end opening awl in one layer?

I was just looking at the 84mm scissors the other day and it was tapered to one side and i'm positive a combotool/nailfile/smallblade/electician blade would fit in the gap. The thing the blade layer spring is 0.3mm narrower than the scissor layer so its not ideal... although i seem to recall reading different years years having different thickness blades. I will know for certain when i eventually pull it apart

Looking at 3 different 91mm Saks across various year models (as indicated back layer tools) i would say NO as there isn't any space. My calipers say scissors are 2.5mm wide, blade 2.4mm. Close enough to guess that on a XAVT where the serrated blade and awl have a hook its a plain old knife spring

How much space does the end opening awl actually take?

Would it be possible to use a slightly wider backspring than the one scissors normally have, and use a washer at either end?

I dont think such a spring exist, if you look at the plier/scissors/saw springs they have a metal end which the brass pin feeds through to keep the spring in place, on the blade/opener springs this is done by the tool itself.  Now that i write this you could probably use two of the narrower can/bottler opener springs (1.94mm x 2 = 3.9mm, -2.5mm scissors =1.4mm ) or  a saw layer spring (1.85mm) butted up against the scissor spring.

Cant tell you what an alox inline awl measures at but a small blade is 1.5mm and the combotool matches that

For a bit more flexibility in spring thickness, you can cut a thin piece of brass the same shape as a backspring (or just a tiny bit smaller, since you want the tool to rest on the spring and not too much on the brass), and it will work as a spacer. I'm doing that with both 0.8mm and 0.4mm brass in my current project; you can see the spacer for the cybertool between the two backsprings in the pics, but I'm working on a thinner one for beside the scissors backspring as well, just waiting on the mailman for some .005" brass for the washers. I'll get some pics of that up once I get all the pieces together.

So it seems it is possible with a bit of 'modding'

That would be a very interesting layer, scissors and end opening awl in one.

Still looking for a modder to take on this project...

So a couple of very kind modders have been in touch with me, however unfortunately due to their location and availability of the cybertool bit driver, the prices I have been so far quoted are way out of my price range (~$180).

Given that I don't mind the tool being on a 91mm frame, I also cannot justify spending so much on what is basically a cybertool 41 with things taken away, and only an end opening awl put on (not that I am belittling the time and effort that goes into any mod to reach the high standard we observe on these forums).

So still hoping and searching...

Like this.

Too easy. Now for the scales. He wants black buffalo horn and exposed rivets. I say wonderful. If any of you other modders want a end opening awl and a metal file. Use the mag glass spring with a spacer on each side. Perfect fit.

Very nice work! Can't wait to see it completed. Now just got to wait to hear back from Rotokid, email has been sent.
