I have a friend who drives a big rig for a living now, and who used to do security work.  He's a pretty solid guy but clowns really get under his skin.  If he's at a carnival or parade and sees a clown he'll leave instantly.  Ditto if there's a clown handing out coupons at the mall.  You can tell he's very uncomfortable around even pictures of clowns, even the friendly ones, and especially the Steven King type.

I suppose I can see how it could freak a person out, but I find it hard to understand it going that far.

I know someone who is the same way around garden gnomes. When his closest friends found out about that, they took it a little too far by plastering everything and everywhere with actual gnomes, pictures, the whole works. The guy almost lost his mind, and was severely re-traumatized by the antics. That didn't end very well.
