can anyone think of....
on: April 15, 2012, 06:21:06 PM
....a light that has both multi levels and a focusing head?  It was a question asked of me (and Nuphoria) at the meet-up and I could only come up with one candidate.  Lets see if any of you flashaholics can come up with any that I'm missing. :tu:

I did actually have a think about this one and all I've come up with so far is some of the Lenslight products.

Far from cheap but supposedly top quality (not owned one myself).

I've got to admit that I'd never come across Lenslight before. :tu:  Any suggestions in the more 'moderate' price band would be very much appreciated I think. ;)

There's a few AA flood to throws on Dealextreme, but I haven't found a really good multilevel one yet.

These both have High>Medium>Disco, so no low mode which I think you wanted:

Both Hugsby and Romisen are decent budget light makers and DX is OK as long as you don't mind waiting a random amount of time for delivery!

Well, having been impressed with Tony's Romison (the CR123 version) for a while now, I've just thrown a few dollars at DX for the RC-29. :-[  Now I'll sit back, make myself comfortable and gently forget that it's coming until some mysterious package lands on my doorstep 6 months hence. ;)

BTW the opening question was not for my benefit, so do keep any suggestions coming. :tu:

Yes please, while I am not in a position to get a new flashlight just yet. I hopefully will be soon and this thread will be invaluable. Especially as I have very little knowledge of what to look for.
Thanks

Hey Gareth,

Check out shiningbeam.com.  The owner, Brian (IIRC) has several Romisen models that are custom models that he sells.  Don't know what his situation is that he gets them, but he tends to get models that have newer emitters than the Romi's on DX, or multiple levels, etc.  Admittedly, the difference in the "levels" often isn't much, but it's something anyway.

As a quick check, I found these two available that both have a flood to throw head on them.

http://www.shiningbeam.com/servlet/the-237/Romisen-RC-dsh-C6-II-R4/Detail

I gave my son one of the single AA F2T lights, and have a 123 one myself with a neutral emitter that I use as a night stand light.  Best little lights for about $20 that I know of.

If you just want levels and flood/spot choice, you could stick a diffuser cap on a fenix ld10. Not the perfect/sexiest solution I know. Or pair up an e05 with another light.

Fenix are working on an adjustable beam light, no specs yet. I did their customer survey about it back in September.

They had a poster of the proposed light at Shot Show 2012.

Well I now have to eat my words as it's just arrived, a perfectly respectable two weeks after I ordered it.  First impressions are excellent; very good build quality and super bright with a 14500 in it.  More than bright enough with an Eneloop in it as well though.  I'll have a bit more of a play when it gets dark. :tu:
