Reduce the load
on: April 22, 2012, 06:10:41 PM
Need some help reducing my load. I Edc a maxped Malaga and need help reducing the load size. Right now there's really not much in it but it's still a little heavy. What are you perfect Edc options for lightning the load?
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I use mainly 2 backpacks, ones a 30L and the other is a 20L i then carry a maxped organizer with my main stuff in and then have other pouches including a first aid kit, some of my stuff i dont need all the time so i just carry the pouches i need, carry my stuff this way makes it easy to change from bag to bag, well this is my way  :D

For a long time now, I have tried to reduce my EDC load.  I do that by looking for items that have the maximum utility at the minimal size.  You can also get by with much less than you think.  The knife on a Vic Classic, for example, will handle just about any urban EDC task you will have.  Or a small folder like a Delica will handle just about anything.  Same thing with a light - a Quark mini or Fenix AAA will do the trick.  The Quark makes a ton of light, and the Fenix is more than plenty when you need it.

Same cost-benefit ratio with everything you carry.  I carry an EDC gun, and you can get lots of utility in a small firearm - Kahr PM9, Ruger LCP, S&W 442, etc.

Additionally, maybe you don't need to carry everything you can think of.  Do you really need a full size MT?  I don't.  Pepper spray?  Eh?  Hand sanitizer?  Not really.

So there are ways to reduce the size and weight of your EDC loadout.  It just requires focusing on size v. utility, and you may find that a smaller light or knife or MT will do the trick.

Reducing the EDC load:  lightweight Caly 3.5 (big blade, small package), and minimalist light, Vic Classic, drivers, etc.

My own approach boils down to "A knife. Anything more than that is a bonus." I EDC more than that, but I don't have much problems keeping it light. :)

I'd suggest one of two approaches:

Either: Remove pretty much everything, and only add them back as you specifically need them. That's obviously a bad idea if you have a good reason to carry an advanced first aid kit, for instance. This approach is best for everything which seems like a good idea, but only will be a hassle to do without. Classic examples are carrying a too heavy multi-tool are that neat bit-set which never sees use.

Or: Make a list of everything you carry, check off (with a date) every time something is used. Then simply decide what frequency justifies carrying the item.

Building or pruning, I think both works.

Now for how I keep things light myself, that's simply not having an EDC bag. What I EDC goes in my pant pockets and my jacket. That's it. If I carry a bag or similar, it's because I need to move papers, carry groceries or whatever, not for my EDC. If it's too big, heavy or bulky to be carried directly on my person, it's not one of my EDC items. If I carried an EDC bag, I'd end up filling it up with goodies to cover every different situation that I'll never encounter anyway.
