Leatherman Rebar: the Eagle has landed.
on: April 30, 2012, 09:52:40 PM
This is not so much a review as it is just a quick look at the Leatherman Rebar.  I've really been looking forward to the Rebar, and (aside from the lack of outside blade deployment) could envision it as supplanting the Wave as Leatherman's flagship model.  This is not insignificant for those of us who carry, hoard, use and abuse MTs.

Leatherman Rebar: the business end.

With Sidekick, top.

First impression is that it is what you think it is - a junior sized ST300, with similar but scaled down functionality.

The best way to describe this tool is this:  if you have the Supertool 300, you pretty much know everything about the Rebar.  And has been often noted, its basically a scaled down version of the ST300.  Same feel, same deployment, same lock, same (just about) everything.  Just right-sized for EDC, with smaller knife, file, phillips, etc.  One thing I noted, which the pics don't capture, is how thin the Rebar is relative to the ST300.

It does feel strange after getting used to the ST300, but the Rebar is much more manageable on the belt.  When closed, the halves do wiggle up and down, but this is true on the ST300.  The tools clump as we have all gotten used to with Leatherman.  And as with all MTs, I could do without the serrated blade and can opener, which would make room for scissors, but maybe others don't share that view.

I selected the leather sheath over the nylon.  It is thin and cheapish in construction, but reduces bulk on the belt relative to the (likely) more durable nylon/velcro flavor.  Nylon might be preferred by the working man, where durability and ease of deployment are important.

Top to bottom:  ST300, Rebar and Sidekick.  Note the lack of spring-loaded pliers on the ST300 and Rebar.

Rebar, top.  As with the ST300, the plier head is finely machined and the jaws are exactly matched at the tip.  The "regular pliers" portion is not large.  Time will tell if it is adequate for its intended usage.  The replaceable cutters take up a lot of space which would otherwise be used by the plier.  Note how there are only about 4 teeth on each side of the Rebar's "regular plier" section.

First impression - its good stuff.  With its truncated tool set, its maybe more suited for EDC and light duty than its beefy big brother.  But at $50 shipped, and being just the right size for easy belt carry, it gets the highly coveted Powernoodle seal of approval.

Those car hood pics of yours have cost me some money already. And now you're at it again. :ahhh Thanks for the first look, cool pics as always.  :tu: I'll have to wait till they hit eBay so I can decide if I need a Rebar, or if I just "need" it. :D

That wasn't me, but I am more than happy to take credit for it.    :D  The current pics were taken on a mirror.

I was referring to this thread. Bought a PS4 cause of it. I thought you said once you take those pics with the sky reflecting off of your car hood. Must have been someone else.

Got my rebar in today too, gotta say it's pretty cool.

One thing that bothers me about it though, is the thick lanyard ring.  it is 3 to 4 times thicker than previous lanyard rings and takes up too much space in the tool, causing the knife blade to be half as thick as the Blast knife blade.  Both the Serrated and PE knives are too thin in my book.  Time will tell if this is going to be a breakage issue.

Thanks for the quick look.  I was hoping someone would post one next to a wingman.  I will most likely be getting one in the next few hours.  They have them in stock at  Academy Sports in a nearby town.

I just got mine today too and I agree that the Rebar is right up there with the Wave as a favorite Leatherman tool.   :D

Pissed off at swisstool.  They claimed to have them in first on the LM site.  Still waiting on confirmation that it has even been shipped, and I ordered it ten days ago.  Done with that company.

So it is out now. Hmmm...did a quick eBay search...only one BO version available for a bit of money. Thinking I will wait till they are more available....or a group buy from Travis would do nicely.
A little Leatherman information.

I think you mean Swiss Knife Shop.  I was grumpy with them too, because they keep selling Rebars even after they run out of stock.   They could do real time inventory management if they wanted to, but they don't.   Not real groovy.  But it all worked out.

Some people are dealing with real problems, while we are playing with our multitools, you know?  :)

 :twak:

That's no fun!  I once made a decision to stick with only LM tools, and the day I was gifted a Gerber MP600 ended that streak.  While I'm a huge Leatherman fan, I have a soft spot for a few tools made by other guys.  The BO MP600 and Vic Spirit to name a few...

Was that a moral decision because you don't like things from a guy named Tim?  ;)

You are correct, there are bigger problems in the world.  I'm just done with these people.  I ordered my Rebar the exact moment they confirmed to have them on the LM site, which was eleven days ago.  Still now confirmation that they can even ship one for me while they have shipped to others.  Pretty pathetic.

That's ridiculous.  I'm kinda worried now, I hear they don't have anymore but they are still taking orders.  I just ordered one for Nuphoria, and I told her they ship fast!  Mine came in three days but in order to ship it fast they must actually HAVE the tool.  Hopefully they stop messing around.

When in doubt though, always email.  They responded to me very quickly, maybe they will get the hint if you tell them you have an issue.

I think its a generic sheath that might also work with the Wingman, etc.

Thanks for the insight noodle, those pliers do look quite odd with the reduced regular section. The all inboard tools with no awl or scissors is still an issue for me I think, but I have warmed a little to the Rebar concept a little after this

The nylon sheath for the Rebar is made in China.  I usually replace them with a Rainbow of California sheath which is made in the USA.
