Best BIG Folders
on:
May 15, 2012, 09:35:23 PM
Hi!
Today I stood in front of my knife drawer and decided to carry a big beast. Normally I prefer smaller knifes, like the Fallkniven U2, the Spyderco Meerkat or a serrated Cricket, but I own quite some larger blades too. So my question is: What are your BIG BEAUTIES? Oh, no SAKs please, I consider them to be MTs
My Top 3:
1. My favourite is a SOG VULCAN. What a great knife, built like a tank and it feels great in my hand. If I had to choose ONE big beast, it sure would be the Vulcan.
2. Spyderco Police, stainless steel, serrated. Simply elegant and very useful, maybe the best serrated blade there is.
3. Spyderco Manix 2: solid lock, good blade steel, great value.

Also Opinel 12s, BEE, Enlan.
and some "deer slayer "models and...
Now that I think of it I have too many really...
For some people a Buck 110 will be big.

My favorite working-around-the-house beater is a CRKT M16-10 "Big Dog," 4" tanto blade, aluminum scales. Just can't bust it, and don't think I haven't tried.
The beefiest I have is a ZT0300, it's one damn beefy piece of hardware. Too bad it's so pretty, it would come in handy the next time I had the need to field-dress a Buick.
The longest is an old-style full-serrated 6½" Cold Steel Vaquero Grande that I occasionally use for yard work, kinda like a small folding machete. I'm not sure if it cuts very well, or just scares the weeds to death.

The biggest folder I currently have in my possession is a CRKT Mirage.
Personally not a big fan, simply because if I had anything really big it would never get used.

OMG, I had tried to get one after they were discontinued, but it seems that no Skirmish owner wants to get rid of it. Great knife!

To give a better answer my only "real user" large folders are:
Opinel 12 slim SS
Cold Steel Kudu
and rarely: Enlan EL-01

There are a number I'm fond of . The Strider AR , GB , and SMF are solid . I'm a huge fan of the Spyderco Military , and Police model .
The only big folder that I own ATM , is an Emerson Super CQC7 .
I prefer folders in the 2.5-3" range .

Amici,
This is an easy one as far as I'm concerned, that's the Buck 110!
Cheers,
Serge

Benchmade skirmish
Spyderco ti military
Benchmade afck
And maybe the onslaught, I really like it but there is something about it that just doesn't seem quite right.
Actually its pretty much a runaway for the skirmish.

Buck 110 - Just a great, classic folder.
Buck 486 - The current Bucklite, a great folder nobody seems to have.
Spyderco Sage 1 - my first "premium" folder, with CF handles a real beauty.

I went back to carrying a larger folder for EDC a few months ago when I acquired a DPx Gear HEST 2.0. With the 3.5 inch blade and titanium frame, it wasn't a heavy knife, but it was solid and quick to deploy.
I sold the HEST when I discovered the Benchmade Triage 915. It is my new EDC. Razor sharp, large modified sheepfoot blade and a very useful folding cutting hook that works great on zip ties.
Then there's my old and well used AFCK. It is one of the older models with the ATS-34 blade and linerlock. Until I got the Triage with the Axis lock, I didn't know what I was missing.

My largest folder (trapper pattern) with my smallest axe
for comparison purposes I decided to take the pic again but put my pocket contents in the shot. For reference it's a Wenger PTC, Gerber Dime, and Preon Revo

While I typically carry a Case Peanut whilst in office attire, I usually carry a large knife on the weekends. My current favorite is a ruby red jigged bone GEC Northfield 23 Trapper. It is 4-1/2 inches long, and nearly as heavy as a Buck 110. It also has two 3-3/4 inch blades, a clip and a spey. It is definitely a weekend carry knife.
I also have a Spyderco Mili (black G10 variety), a yellow PacSalt, yellow Case Trapper, a black FRN Endura, and a Buck 110 rounding out my large knives. I love them all, but slipjoints get carried the most.

A tad large for pocket carry, innit?
I see you're in the UK. I can just imagine the convo: "But officer, it's
non-locking!

I think this counts, its one of my larger folders. I just got this Spyderco Rock Lobster and really dig it, love the blade shape and ergo's.

My navaja (can't actually remember the maker off the top of my head)
also the Opinel #12 and the Buck 110 are two classics I wouldn't get rid of.
