How PC gaming sucks these days.
on: May 15, 2012, 11:47:42 PM
Here is a good one for you. I just bought DiabloIII, eagerly awaiting this title for what seems like ages now. Just to show you how dorky I was back in the late 90s, I used to belong to a group that hung out in the opentech support forum on the old Battlenet called the Usual Suspects.

Anyways, It has been years since I went on Battlenet simply because I moved away from Blizzard games once they got WOW out the door. I am still happy to say I have never played WOW.

I installed the Diablo III disk in the drive...and before I know it, It has opened my browser wanting me to log into Battlenet. Well the last time I was on Battlenet, it looked way different, and for the life of me, I couldn't remember my old account info.

OK, no problem. I can create a new one and all would be good to go. However, after finishing all the details and press create, I get an error stating that my email is already in use. Hmmm...I dig deeper and find out that I can request to change my password. I do so after jumping through a few flaming hoops. Then I get messed up by those stupid messed up word quizzes they pester you about because they are worried you're a bot and not a human. I had to type 3 different ones in before I got it right. My frustration is starting to go overtime.

After I am allowed to change my password, I figure all is good. While I am doing this, the game is slowly installing to my drive. Now get this, once the game is loaded, I attempt to log into Battlenet through diablo only to get a smurfing 3003 error. What the...! I try once again with the same results. On the third attempt, I read that Battlenet may be down for a few hours as they are reconfiguring the North American servers. Are you kidding me. I waited ages for this title, only to not be able to play in single player without having to be tethered to a net connection. How about paying full price for a title, and not be able to play it because Battlenet is down. So much for logic.

This folks, is the reason why I think PC gaming sucks these days.

I agree with the last part. Why can't a guy play the single player game without connecting to battlenet?

This is part of the reason I don't plan PC games anymore, you aren't buying the game, you only lease it, and they can shut you down anytime they wish because the lima bean production in Brazil is down or garlic price in China went up. All started with half life 2 and that pile of smurf steam that came with it, and all went downhill from there.

That's what I do on my phone, the version I paid for need to check freakin license before it starts, pirated version doesn't, how dare of us to try to play an offline game without net connection...  ::)

I play pencil and dice hard-copy Role playing games. Unless my character sheet catches on fire, I'm good to go. Also, I can mod it to my heart's content, no monthly fees, no updating hardware. I started feeling in the early-mid 90s like it was a money-pit to do electronic/on-line gaming. I own a PS3, and a few titles, but they were given to me. I'm not into e-games anymore. Smurf them!

As an amusing side... I DID do an internship at a videogame company building 3d models for a MMORPG.

HUZZAH!!

No matter how you try to explain it away, no matter how massively multiplayer your online thing is, you're still mostly talking to a bunch of guys, sitting in front of their computers, many in their parent's basement and/or their underwear. And the insulating nature of the internet means you're all playing... by yourselves. Creepy.

Yes, online authentication is a bit of a PITA... I got to play diablo3 during the open beta test weekend... I also had some issues logging in at first, but searching the battlenet forums gave me an answer pretty quick.

I'll probably also play single player only when I get the game, since you can't seem to play North America & Europe together (that I'm aware of)
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

I am one of the few guys I personally know who hasn't played Diablo II much in the past.  All my gamer buddies are salivating over this new title, and I only remember snippets of the first two.  I just don't care for 3rd person gameplay all that much.  Now Skyrim on the other hand, I waited years for and was not dissapointed.  I am a huge TES fan, and a huge console gaming fan on top of that.  I have never played a console game that required internet.  It's helpful and you can't get updates without it, but all my favorite games have always worked with or without Xbox live.  I can't wait for the DLC to come out for Skyrim, expansions are so fun!

The online verification is what has stopped me from getting any new games since FarCry, which is sad because I want to play Portal 1 & 2.  Only one computer has Internet access at a time, here, since wifi is a no go, for several reasons.  I'm not going to bog down an office computer just for a couple games that I probably won't be able to play a couple years from now.

With that said, I am going to purchase the original Tie Fighter VS X-Wing games from a family friend, which'll be fun. :D

  What kind of settings?

Table-top RPG is friends playing around in the moment, and things can happen neither the players nor the GM ever had thought of by themselves. A computer game is limited by what the game designers were capable of thinking of and creating. That's the beauty of table-top RPG, it is an involving game for a small group of people, and it only exists in the moment. Like a sand castle or an ice sculpture. It is actually sort of a principle of mine, I don't like games I can program a computer to play better than myself. Many computer games are either eye-hand coordination or linear optimization problems, both of which I see no point of using any of my own time to solve.

I used to play a lot of table-top RPG back in the day, but I still come round to some friends once or twice a month to play.

TORG, Masterbook, Paranoia, Shatterzone, AD&D, D&D (the one preceding AD&D, not that strange stuff called D&D now), Traveller: New Era, Savage Worlds, SAGA, etc, etc, and more homegrown settings than I care to mention. Good times.
