Buck Knives
on: June 10, 2011, 08:42:27 PM
When i was in scouts you either carried a Vic, Gerber or Buck knife. I carried all 3.  :D  This one is my Bucklite i bought (about 1988-89) at the army-navy store that supplied all my scouting needs. Great store too..owner was a big scouting supporter.

Soon after i bought this with hard earned lawn mowing money i took it to Philmont Scout Ranch in northern New Mexico. Massive backpacking base in the foothills of the rockies. For 3 months i used it to whittle, fillet trout, open those dehydrated food packs, making monkeyfists, and anything else i could use it for. It came with me to Philmont four more times, surviving the infamous Rayado trek. When and if i return one day it's coming with me. It being orange has prob kept me from misplacing it during those long trips.

On some scouting trips, I would carry my dad's BuckMaster model 184.  I imagine if a kid showed up to a scouting event with one of those Rambo-style knives these days they'd have it confiscated  :-\

once you got your totin chip you had free reign to carry whatever. Get caught being stupid with a blade or ax our scoutmaster would beat your *** with a canoe paddle. Then he would cut your card in half with the offending edged device. Took 6 months to earn back..meanwhile no knife/ax/hatchet.

wonder how scoutmasters today handle stuff..with everyone being offended, sue happy, and PC.

Amici,
those are mint Bucklites and awesome colors too! My only regret is that I never picked one up back in the 1990's when they were still being made.

You just can't beat the quality of a Buck knife, especially the hunter series. sure some folks complain about the steel after they snap the tips, but that's usually the result of using the knife incorrectly IMHO..

Cheers,
Serge

They didn't, a custom knifemaker gave these two and a few others a "tune-up" consisting of exquisite filework to the brass bolsters, and the lanyard holes..  :tu:

The 112 is a 2009, and the 110 is my original 1995. You can tell by the swoop of the clip in the 110 since they are made more tapered nowadays due to folks snapping off the tips..

Cheers,
Serge

I love Buck knives.  :tu:

me too :D

Just got back from Lafayette Louisiana..cajun country ..for a week long work excursion. I popped in to a local camping/shooting supplies dealer around the corner from the store before work two nights ago. Found this Buck 110 for 17.99  :o.  A little shop worn but razor sharp! I have it resting..soaking up some rem oil for a few hours like all new acquisitions.

Awesome knife..this is my second Buck. Thing is built like a tank. No blade play at all. A might heavy for pocket carry..guessin this is why they provide a sheath. Nylon sheath is a bit cheap-ish feeling. Been drooling over some custom leather sheaths. No shortage of 110 leather sheaths out there.

Amici,
I agree, they did have a much sleeker profile, but too many snapped their blades because they forgot the rule, "blades are for cutting NOT prying" hence why so many have snapped only to be returned to Buck for replacment..

Cheers,
Serge

My 110 circa '70-'71 with band-aid box PSK tin. I "melted" the bolsters years later for a less boxy shape.

Buck 428 Selector. I believe there were 9 different blades available for it.

Looks like Buck is bringing production of some of their cheaper knives back to the USA.

I was in Academy and noticed their stockmans are made in the US....were china last year.

One of my first knives, maybe my very first, was a buck. I think it was a 55. Very VERY handy knife. It now resides in some woods somewhere where I misplaced it, dropped it, had it fall out of pocket/pack, something.

As far as I know as of two years almost all of Buck's knives were made in the US, including the super-cheapies like the Bantam series.

The only exceptions were some of the slipjoints (Rough Rider) and the Nobleman series (Sanrenmu).  I wonder if those two lines are getting shifted as well.

There are US and Chinese made versions of the Stockman by Buck.  The Buck 301 and the 371 are cousins, and the 303 Cadet and 373 Trio are the smaller ones.  I don't have a US made Buck slippie - yet.  Reading this thread though inspired me, and I have a yellow handled 301 inbound.  I have four Chinese Bucks - both sizes of the Stockman, a Muskrat, and a Trapper.  All of them are actually excellent knives for the money, great F&F.  The Muskrat is one of my favorite EDC slipjoints.
