flatfender Willy's
on: February 25, 2008, 03:53:59 AM
I just ran across these pics and thought I'd share.  Many of you know I love classic Broncos.  Well, there's this guy that goes on trail rides with my club that has a modified Willy's flatfender that I just have to show.  It has lots of great updates, the best of which is the Chevy Vortech V6 under the hood.  Check it out!

The third shot shows the flat he had on our last trail ride, with the offending chunk of wood sticking out of the sidewall.  It's on the spare tire carrier.

You mentioned classic broncos.

Right now my dad and I are restoring a 1970 Sport with a 302 and a 3-speed.

We are putting in a DANA 44 front axle and an NP 435 4-speed. It should be pretty sweet when its done. Sadly, my dad says its too much of a money pit for us to keep it. So, when it does get done, its gonna be sold.

Its going to be nice though. We got the Wild Horses 4x4 3.5" lift with dual front shocks, and we welded on the shock hoops then had the complete frame and D44 and 9" powdercoated black to give it a little bit of protection.

I love those old Willys, one of my cousins had one about 30 years ago,it was stolen, stripped out and burned. He replaced it with a Dodge Power Wagon, which for some peculiar reason seemed to be replacement of choice for old Willys owners back then.

Sounds like a great truck getpower.  I would love to have an NP435 in mine.

Mine is a stock, cut 1967 w/a 289 and the 303 3-spd, with a Duffy/Hurst floor shifter.  It has all the original mechanicals, including the Dana 30.  The 289 has never been rebuilt, and has 185,000 miles on it.  It burns and leaks oil, but it still has good compression.  I replaced the original clutch in it 3 years ago, only because the throwout bearing started squealing.  It's been repainted, but has never been restored and is pretty clean.

Here's a pic of it from a "show 'n shine" a few years ago.  It's not a show truck--it sees trail duty often.

Now that is a thing of beauty.  And it will probably will outlast most modern SUVs on the market.  Rumor had that was what brought down the Willy's company.  They were made too good.

Yeah it is gonna be a nice truck. But, I'll get another and restore it. Hmmm, maybe a nice little 4 cylinder cummins would do it some good to!

Hopefully I can find a real Baja Bronco when I look for another one later. Those Bajas are niiiicccccceeee.

A friend of mine has a 4BT Cummins in his.  It's the perfect thing for a Bronco, IMO.  Gobs of torque.

Good luck with the Baja.  I hope you've got a hell of a lot more savings than I do.  My opinion is that collectibles like the Baja should remain completely stock, just like the uncut Broncos.  It kills me when I see someone these days cut an uncut Bronco--there are plenty of cut ones available.

My theory is that any vintage or classic vehicles that belong to people who don't look after them should be seized.

My neighbor had a 1970 Mustang that she used as a daily driver, here, in a place with one of the most corrosive winters on the planet.  And, she didn't rust proof it.

Bottom line, one less vintage pony in the world.  ::)

That's a good thing for those who already own a '70 Mustang.  She's helping to raise the value of every other surviving '70 pony just that little bit more.

Man this thread make me think I need to restore the willys sitting out in my family's junkline(every ranch has one out here). I don't think it would take much work to get running, plus the neat thing is that my grandpa put a flathead v8 in it when he decided that he had to use the jeep for a sprayer rig.

No, we set the axels up on blocks and out of the dirt. The nice thing is that out here the weather isn't too destructive on vehcles. Salt is the only problem and that started in the last 10 years or so, so the jeep doesn't have to worry about that. I know I should start on it for a project, but I've got several problems blocking that. 1. I'm 18 and going to college next fall, so I don't have the time or money. and 2. I've got another vehicle that I'd like to start on. It's a 1965 chevy k10 4x4 that is in running condition and is stored in one of our buildings. The shame with that truck is that there is hardly any rust on it, but the body is so loaded with dents that about the only piece worth trying to fix is the cab. That's the problem with being on a ranch, there's lots of fun projects out there that can't be done because I have to work on the not so fun projects.

Dont mean anything bad about the flatfenders. But I am a really big guy at around 6'2" and the steering wheel on those things is sitting in your lap.

Just not comfortable for an emergency situation where you need to get the heck out of the jeep in a hurry.
