They added it to cabelas website over the last few days, so i'm guessing it'll be shipping very soon.

Honestly, i couldnt care less. Maybe using gerbers have given me (negative)bias, but all of these 'out the front' style tools just feel like gimmicky garbage. They always rattle, and the other tools seem to be compromised to make room for the required mechanism to allow the pliers to slide out.

If you absolutely need 1 had opening pliers, loosen the pivots on your leatherman or get a SOG.

Hadn't seen it before.

Some tools aren't made for heavy-use.  I suspect this tool is designed towards people who need speed over features.  From the unique tool selection (gutting hook, Oxygen wrench, serrated blade), I believe Leatherman had first responders (paramedic, fire-fighters) in mind, the only thing that seems to be missing is a glass breaker.  I'd imagine in those situations, a split second to open the pliers could mean life or death.

As a technician, I like the idea that I can get the tool out of my sheath, and open a philips screwdriver with just one hand.

Seriously, if the slide out pliers were such a weak, useless gimmick, why have there been so many military contracts that stipulated slide out pliers?  So many contracts in fact that the folks at Leatherman think that it' worthwhile to try and chase some down for themselves?

Anyone who thinks Gerber is crap should realize that they are probably one of the most common multitools in active military service today, and that many of Leatherman's new designs incorporate something that Gerber came up with, like the replaceable cutters, exchangeable blade holder and now the useless slide out pliers.

I want this for camping. Might need some slight modding to set it right but a smaller tool set, OHO pliers and blades and a saw is basically all I want on me. Going to mod one of the flat drivers to an awl and a longer saw would be better as per Bobs specs. Probably need a Skinth for it to make it the ultimate camping multi! :pok:  :pok:

I was basing that off my experience with the diesel and the flik. Those are garbage. I also know a few people in the forces who were supplied gerbers and absolutely hate them. I know the contract with the canadian forces was ended and switched to SOG.

But you're right, judging a company that has put out a LOT of chinese made crap over the past 10 years, and celebrity endorsed re-makes of their cheap chinese crap(Bear Grylls) is unfair.
So i now have a new military issue 600 coming my way. Will it rattle? Absolutely, since thats what every single person(fan or hater) says about them. Will it hold together well? Maybe, based off reviews i have seen. Does a military endorsement really mean anything now a days? It shouldnt, since it does not take an annalist to know just how corrupt and crooked military equipment acquisition is.

Personal perspective ...

Leatherman impressed me with the Core, Wave, Mini, Charge AL - disappointed me with the Pulse, Squirt, Skeletool, Sideclip

Gerber impressed me with Dime, Octane, MP400, disappointed me with Flik, Solstice, Suspension ... not fully decided about the Strata

Victorinox impressed me with most things but not 108mm (particularly combo tool), Skipper, minichamp

No manufacturer has the monopoly in getting it right or wrong, and country of manufacture is NOT a true reflection of whether a tool is any good or not either. If you're going to write off a manufacturer completely because you didn't like two tools - you're probably going to miss out on some good stuff. Believe me, I know - I've nearly written off Leatherman more than once  :pok: :pok: :pok:

Ya Ive liked and disliked different tools from most of the manufacturers.  Very few Victorinox products I've disliked though (I still dont the plastic scales on any of their stuff), and most of gerber tools (MTs and Machetes specifically) I've disliked.

I'll clarify that my specific issue though is the steel used, not design or where a tools was manufactured.  I haven't handled any chinese steel I like or would pay for.  I also dont feel china needs my support anymore than they already get.  So for me avoiding made in china stuff is a good way to make sure I dont get tools made with chinese steel.  That being said I do own ONE tool made in china with china steel thats design was so cool to me, I didnt care about the rest, and thats the byrdrench.

Absolutely, country of origin only generalizes factors such as the engineering quality of the design, the quality of the machining and assembly process, quality control and even the quality of the material used.

If you move any multitool company's factories and employees to another country and kept the same standards (including the wage of the employees and the level of skill/education of emplyees), the tool would come out exactly the same.

If there's enough interest I don't see why not.  We don't do group buys based on what I personally like or not.  If you want one, and this goes for anyone who would like one, send Travis a message about it.
