Excel geekiness

Before I start, let's just get one thing out of the way:

Right.  I like SAKs.  I like black plus scales.  I like the mag/philips layer.  I like mods.  So, how to combine these things?  By building black cellidor plus versions of the Yeoman/Explorer family of knives. 8)  But how do I make sure I'll get enough parts to build them?  By laying out the plan in Excel:

I can tweak the quantities of the donor models to make sure I get what I need and don't have too many spares.  Models in green are what I want, models in yellow are built from leftovers.  Prices are from swisstool.co.uk, not including quantity discount.  However, car boot season is just round the corner, so I'm going to see if I can get some S/H models.  Unlikely that I'll be able to source what I need so it'll probably mean buying new.  Still, it's cheaper than golf, right?

You can also get a large knife/combo tool from Bantam and Waiter models. Waiters are Bantam+corkscrew, basically...

Yes, but I want 91 mm knives in black with plus scales, which only seem to be readily available on Compacts, Explorer + (and they're difficult to get in the UK, it seems) or Swiss Champs.  Expensive tastes. ::)

If you are in need of black plus scales - I can forward you some. They are available here at around 2,- € per Pair plus teh scale tools, summing up to around 5 or 6 €. Maybe this gives you some freedom in buying donor knives.
And, I do have a set of new Takeoffs with a small Continental ad-print on the front scale. The stamp is 1,50 €

Yep the compact is the really the only option to get the 91mm combo.  The 84mm version is too small.

I like your logic on figuring out whats needed.  For me I rotate between buying explorers, compacts and swisschamps depending on what parts im out of.
PM me or email sakmodder [at] gmail . com if you are looking for custom SAK work.

Welcome!  Nice Excel sheet!

I love Excel and have used it in very complex, multiple sheets, multiple files with formulas all connected in a manufacturing environment for production numbers, scrap, etc. and also used Excel in creating inventory control, quicken/accounting type files and of course my golf scores from when I golfed! LOL

I will have to keep that in mind if I ever do any modding! Thanks for the post! :D

White yes, but no white plus scales. Plus scales are available (to me) in Translucent blue and red, red and black IIRC.

The sheet has shown that whichever combination of donors I get it'll still be expensive to build all of the knives I want. One or two at a time to begin with, I think - but where to start? Explorer + Trail Guide, probably. Explorer is a good EDC knife and the Trail Guide would make a great pair with my Skeletool. My alox yeoman should be finished next week too.

lowtech, I might take you up in the offer if the scales later, thanks. I will see if I can find a UK source first though.
