V-cutter thoughts ?
on: July 07, 2012, 09:01:02 AM
So what is your take on the V-cutter ? i had one on my PT and never used it much, at work i undo a lot of boxes and find that the blade on my tinker gets very gundged up from glue from the tape, this is easy to clean but i wonder how easy the V-cutter would be   and is it a good UK legal alternative to a blade, im thinking of putting a V-cutter on my bladelsess PPP but wonder folks thoughts on this tool  :tu:

I've got one, but never got round to fitting it to my PPP. I stuck it on my motorcycle keys, as an emergency helmet strap cutter, temporarily. I reckon it would get really gunked up with tape if you used it to open boxes.

Ive fitted it to my ppp so ill see how it goes, i cant see it being a good replacement for a blade though but i do carry a SAK or opinel in my pocket so no big problem, we will see  :tu:

I have fitted one to my Fuse but I never cut anything with it (apart from string as a test)
And yes I reckon it will get gummed up with tape juice

I'd like to get rid of my socket driver on my Powerlock and looked at one of these. I'd have to move some tools around, I know. As a box cutter I'm not sure how effective the V would be. I'd imagine it would dull up or (like Eciton pointed out) gum up and start to drag. I've done a lot of box cutting over the years, and it seems that tape and cardboard will dull just about anything pretty quickly.

I cant see me sharpening a pencil with it  :D i still think these are a limited tool but on my ppp a possible alternative to having no blade , as long as ive got my trusty tinker or opie i should be ok,  :tu:

I prefer the V-cutter for tasks like opening boxes or cutting small retail cords and ties.  It's an easy cleanup for maintenance IMO and a great alternative to the chisel ground blade.  :tu:

I thought it was really smurfty, not really sharp to begin with, doesn't stay sharp and can't be sharpened.

That's what I've heard about it.  I open boxes all day at work, but I think I'll pass on the v-cutter.  I can either use my regular blades and clean the residue off, which is easy with some of the cleaners we have, or just use my utility knife and toss the blade when it gets all crapped up.
There's no such thing as "Too pretty to carry".  There's only "Too pretty NOT to carry"...... >:D

Not a fan of the V-cutter. I own one SOG V-cutter, on my Blacktip, and one is enough. I can understand for a rescue tool to cut seatbelts, but not on an EDC tool.

My reason to give this a try again is because my ppp is my edc MT and wanting it bladeless due to uk laws, although the ppp doesnt lock im still not sure if with the handles closed with the blade out this is still classed as a lock blade, i carry a pocket knife so no big issue but thought a back up if i forgot my blade, i know the V-cutter is limited but just wondered folks thoughts on its use and there experiances  :tu:

I use the one on my powerlock fairly often.  never had any problems with it, tho I never used it for boxes.  I like that it is replaceable, fairly cheap, and the blades meet at a sharp angle so they don't really get bogged down when they are cutting.
