I need another watch...
on: June 20, 2012, 01:34:54 AM
... like I need a hole in the head, and yet I just put a bid down on a nice custom Seiko diver.   :ahhh

It's a low bid with high shipping so I'm hoping to be outbid fairly quickly.  I'm not going to raise my max bid, so I'm either going to get a heck of a deal or be outbid.  Either way I'm happy since I really don't need another watch.

I would however like to take a moment to blame Chrissy for me even looking at watches since it was this photo that started me looking:

In case anyone is wondering, here is the picture from the auction.  According to the description there isn't a lot of customization, but I think it is very effective.

Quote
The watch case is an SKX007, but has been modified with a Seiko Five military dial.  It has a modified silver chapter ring and a SKX171 bezel.

Yup- I have an Orange Monster already and I love it, but it gets almost no wrist time.  My MTO ZA1 has been pretty well on my wrist non stop for the last couple of years or so.

As for the one I linked to above, I am one dollar and one day away from being outbid on it...

I like that one, it's not overly fussy.

Well I just got outbid on this one.  I knew it was only a matter of time!

I think the edge of my seat excitement on this auction has cured me (temporarily) of buying a new watch!  I imagine it won't be long again before I start looking- it never is.

I could probably make you one def.  just have to find the parts.

There was another one on eBay (out of my range when I saw it luckily) that was just about exactly what I want, so when I'm ready I'll let you know.  I actually found all the parts and thought it might be fun to build one from scratch.

The one like chrissys would be pretty easy to make, bead blast case, keep seikos own doal and hands and get a whilte chapter ring and get the bezel done in black, powdrecoat might be too thick but would have to keep it out on the insides, anodizing might be better, its all doable Def  :tu:

Mea culpa...

I love Seikos, they are indeed like Hondas and I've been lucky with every one I've had :)

My mod was not done by me so I have no idea what someone originally paid for it, but they are so versatile there's plenty around. I'll confess now that I picked it up from t'bay for £67. Added a good strap and it's sorted.... bloody bargain!

The only caveat I would give here, is watch out for mods with after market dials with rubbish lume.

I've done a lot dumber things while being influenced by women so I guess you are off the hook Chrissy!

I have been looking at a few other "custom" Seikos with really ugly dials on them. I figure someone spends $200 on a Seiko, disassembles it and rebuilds six watches with cheapo parts and sell them for $75 each.

That was a bargain chrissy, modding seikos is addictive and there loads of parts out there from yobokies and other sources, seiko divers are also pretty easy to do, ive done a few over the years and could take them apart blindfolded in the end, just remember if you pop off the bezel watch the litle ball bearing and spring in the hole underneath, i have used bic pens tips as a replacement for the ball when lost, also the compression rind under the bezel that holds the crystal on can be diddly to pop back on, i use a home made vice to push it back on straight, i have to say the 6309 diver is one of the easyest to take apart and work on, good luck  :tu:

Ya know, I just gotta say I still don't get the appeal of Seiko divers or G-Shocks.  Give me a good, medium-sized swiss quartz any day and I'm happy as a clam.

Yes Gunga :)

They often sell high quality refurbs and seem to get all good feedback for it.
Consequently, the prices they go for tends to be on the high side.

I havent worn a watch in 20 yrs, but the fancy new ones you guys talk about sure are neat.  I'm not a guy that does anything ever based on time though so I never need to know the time.  I go into work when I wake up, and my phone will alert me if I have a dentist apt or whatever.  Some of those high end ones that have extra gadgets like the temperature and air pressure seem gadget worthy to me though... hmmm...

Wearing my Seiko 5 now... still love it... that's a nice looking vintage watch there tho, I was bidding on a number of vintage 5s when I was looking for mine... ended up buying new, just wish I could wear it more often (I have a beater work watch to get bashed about and dirty with all the nasty stuff we use)
