What do you guys think about the New Core?
on: February 21, 2008, 12:42:31 AM
I had seen my buddy carrying around a SuperTool at a swap meet about a month ago, which was unusual behavior for him as he always had his trusty Kershaw Scallion. But I saw him using the SuperTool and it sorta woke something up inside of me and I decided that I needed a new leatherman. I already had a PST, but never carried it around. So, after a few more weeks of seeing him carry it around all of the time, I decided that I needed to see if one could come inn handy in my everyday life.

So, I ordered a Charge ALX which seemed best suited for a stationary engineer in a hospital more than for someone who would carry it everyday.

So today I ordered the Core and I would like to know what you guys think about the Core. I have heard good reviews and I have heard some problems as well. Please tell me what your expiriences have been.

Welcome to the forum!

Here's my take on the Core:

Leatherman Core Review

I'm not the biggest fan of tools without scissors on them, but the Core isn't too bad.  It's not flashy or fancy, which are things tools shouldn't be anyway.  You'll find lots of Core fans here!

Thanks for the reply and the hospitality. I have found that I personally nearly never need scissors at all. And like you (I think) have stated before, these tools are machined so well that you can use the pliers as scissors if you have to.

I usually though find that a knife is good enough, I mean I dont have a beard to trim or anything. And I also always carry a Kershaw Scallion with me.

I am in love with the SURGE but the CORE is another very fine tool! It has the best drivers found on any multi and everything on it works well (similar to SuperTool)! Leatherman doesn't try to fit as many functions into one implement like Victorinox does either. Like with the Swisstools the medium size flathead is on a bottle opener so it doesn't work as well! Anyways back to the CORE! The big blades work fantasticly also the serrated knife is a wonderful style blade! The stranded wire cutter is also an amazing function found on the CORE/SURGE it will cut many things the wire cutters can't! You have to buy a SURGE next!

Welcome to the forum buddy! :)

I don't own a Core, but I do own a Supertool and I am very pleased with the tool selection on there.  They suit my needs very well.
I'm back!!

Scissors are one of the highest used implements for me, so I really like to have them.

I gave up carrying a dedicated knife long ago in favor of a SAK and multitool combo.

Well, if I start just carrying the Leatherman around then maybe I'll retire my Kershaw

As I just wrote in Viking's thread about his dislikes of Victorinox's Spirit I feel the LM Core is the best MT out at this time. I wish Leatherman would come out with an outside-opening version. I think that would sell better than almost all other of their multis. Maybe add scissors for Def, too.  :)

I think it's too friggen' big.

Other than that it seems to have a very respectable tool collection - Not least of which is the two extra features in the reverse of the plier head.

(I'm not actually sure if it really is that big, or if it just seems big because it is so box shaped, I think It would be more appealing if the handles sunk in to the plier head in the way of the old Supertool)

The Core is a good tool.

Comfortable handles, easy to access tools, strong form factor, good selection of tools and a fair price point.

The only fault I had with it was that it didn't have a scissors, everything else was cool.

Funny, my only fault with the Blast & Fuse is that they do have scissors.

I'd rather a file or Reamer.

I'm with you on this one.  Although I do like scissors on an EDC tool, I see the Core and the Supertool as heavy duty, tough tools and I just don't regard scissors as being a "tough" implement.

Unless you get the knifeless Fuse.

Has anyone seen a knifeless Fuse in BO?

Core took over as my EDC for work over the surge. I really like the drivers, and it just seems stronger than the surge.

Well I really get a better grip with it, plus that damn little tab on the blade exchanger wont dig into my hand when I really have to cut something hard with the blade and have to really bear down. Plus I can put my sticky tape on it. :ahhh

LOL! I still have not had the blade exchanger tab stick in to my hand or get pinched by the big blades as Nav. did with his new Wave!

Touche.

Nope, I looked for one for a few weeks on eBay but never saw one listed.
