Behold, the King of junk.
on: July 09, 2012, 08:28:11 PM
I was perusing Canadian Tire this past Friday when I literally stumbled into a knife display. I stubbed my toe on a protruding foot. After I blinked away the pain, I saw a sign that stated $6.99. When I looked at the display, my first reaction was to run for it...but then I quickly thought back to this thread...

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,35810.15.html

...in which I proudly stated that my parents had prevented me from buying one when I was a child, and that I hadn't bought one since. Not sure what came over me next, but before I know it, I am past the checkout with one of these "Survival Knives" in my parcel bag.

As I sat down in the driver's seat, I thought to myself...what did I just do. I immediately consoled myself by stating that it was not even ten dollars. That reassured me somewhat as I have had real good luck with cheap junk in the past...and some real stinkers too. But overall, more good luck than bad. I quickly put aside any thoughts of "you sucker", and drove home.

At home, when I opened the knife, I started to laugh uncontrollably. This is the worst knife I have ever seen. So cheap, that China isn't written on it. In fact, nobody wanted to call it their own, hence the lack of any stamping on the blade.

It goes further than that however. The handle is a plastic so cheap  that if I squeezed the handle a little to strongly, it starts to deform! The handle is made of very cheap plastic. Worst part yet, the threads are also plastic. Hmmmm, I wonder how long it would take me to strip those threads.

On the end of the removable plastic cap is a compass. Well this is sort of the highlight as the compass works rather well. However, it rattles very loosely in its holder, and if I shake it enough, It will pop out and roll about the floor. Well that got my two cats excited right quick, and it took me a good 12 minutes to get it away from them.  I guess I could have paid 7 bucks on a fancy cat toy if worse comes to worse.

The sheath is terrible. Thinnest fabric I have ever seen. Oddly enough, they used a hard plastic pocket for the included stone. Now if only they had extended that plastic to add some much needed rigidity to the whole affair. I can now see why some people have (I have only read this online...so I can't corroborate its truthfulness) driven their knife into their leg when bending at the knees.  This sheath offers no protection to the knife, the user, other wildlife, etc. You would be safer shoving the knife down the front of your pants.

The knife is just all around terrible quality. The guard is made of a thin metal that rattles something fierce. The handle is plastic, the blade is who knows. I might hazard a guess at stainless, but there are no marks. For all know, this blade could be made out of tin. It isn't terribly sharp. There is also a bottle opener, and a what is, I think, some sort of saw like notches on the back of the blade. You would be all day sawing at a piece of wood...but that is ok. It looks cool. Mind you, I reckon the blade would snap right quick at that. So you can forget any dreams of lumberjacking with this on your belt.

Inside the handle, there is the usual little packet of misc items. You get a few safety matches, two little hooks, and some nylon line.  They used two key chain rings as spacers. Now if they only included a thin metal wire saw, those key rings would look a lot more impressive. As it stands, filler I guess.

Here is the second most impressive thing about this knife...the stone. I am amazed they included a stone in here.  The pouch it resides in is a bit large. In other words, the stone rattles. With both the stone and the compass rattling around, Ninja's need not apply.

I now truly know the depths of junk, for I think I have seen the bottom of it. I actually feel ripped off 7 dollars. I should have listened to my better senses. Heck, cat toys run less than that. Ah well, here kitty kitty, I have a compass...er new toy for you!

The funny thing about all of this, the only reason I bought it was because everyone stated it was pure utter evil junk. I should have listened.

You see, you really have to be 10 yrs old to really appreciate this knife, and have had just watched Rambo and Rambo II.  Its what I like to call an imagination enhancement knife!  I begged and pleaded my parents to get mine in the 80s and it was 9.99 then!

50ft-trad, It is not just bad...it is utter offal bad!

Sazabi, heck no. The cats are playing with their new compass toy. You know, if I didn't have cats, there wouldn't be anything to salvage from this simulacrum.

syph007, I hear you. I wanted one after watching Rambo as well. My parent's apparently had better sense then I have to this day.

nuphoria, you can't really compare 1980's cheap to 2012 cheap.  :D

Weird, the one I had was cheap metal at least for a handle.  I still toy around once in a while with buying one of these:

http://www.harborfreight.com/8-inch-hunting-survival-knife-90714.html

as it belongs very close to this other one and I feel it will probably be this generations version of the cheap rambo knife.  It's a fairly large chunk of steel and I am just waiting for it to be on sale at the right moment to get one at the lowest possible price.

The one that has tempted me on and off for a good few years now has been the Aitor Jungle King. That's waaayyyy more than $7, and I just can't bring myself to do it. I know I'd play with it for a day or so and then think ... now what? They're quite pricey these days, although they do come with some good write ups despite being what they are ... you just can't be quite as brutal as with other knives.

There's no way I'd carry one though, and I've much more appropriate stuff for using at home, in the garden, or at the boat.  Having said all that, had I stumbled across that one at that price ... there's a high chance I'd have got one too

I tried to sharpen one and it was just junk pot metal.   I gave mine away and did not feel good about giving away junk. :(

I used mine alot back in the 80's , i remember the saw wasnt very good but did saw but was hard work, i struggled to get a sharp edge on the blade, my blade moved about, but i still thought it was cool, i remember i got a buck master copy after it and another survival knife with a ali cast handle and a drop point shaped blade with sharks type teeth for the saw, i loved that one as was very cool, plus as it had a 5 inch blade it was pretty solid  :tu:

It's funny- when I test drove that Hummer H2 a few weeks ago it hadn't yet been through the shop to be cleaned up and there was a cheap crappy 80's Rambo knife rammed under the front seat!

You could tell that truck was owned by a real outdoorsman type!  :D

I'm a little bummed to see how cheap they are now.

At least I could use the one I had.

It was junk but I think it is a much better knife than the one there selling now. I had a lot of fun with my Rambo knife and I never did break it.

A kid would break the new one in a day.

I had one of these... when I was 11 or so. Mine had a metal handle, instead of plastic. I learned a lot from it. I learned what 'full tang' meant. It also traumatized me to trying to sharpen blades, which I have only gotten over since joining this forum. My wire saw broke the first time I tried to use it. And, like yours, the only thing worth anything in it was the ball compass... which actually worked very well, and I kept for years.

Ya that wire saw never made it through the first branch I tried it on.  The blade broke off at the 'tang' and the only part I kept was the compass which I took out of its casing.

You can think of this as a super low end knife... OR.. a super high end tent peg.  :D
