black leatherman mini tool dated 8/2000
on: July 25, 2012, 10:37:26 PM
Is anyone familiar with this leatherman mini tool? I did a search and I can't seem to find one that looks exactly like it. I've never been too knowledgeable on these smaller MTs.

I searched the forum and google. I forgot to take a picture of the nylon sheath, but it's black with red lettering and says leatherman tool group inc. I know the lettering on the tool is hard to see in my pics because of the black color, it says Leatherman, US pat. 4744272, mini tool, Portland OR. on both sides of the tool closed.

The dates inside the handles says 0800, and 0101.

It's SUPER rare.

I just bought one on ebay for an obscene price.

If you have the sheath that goes with it, you have a gem!

It's one of the most elusive BO tools you can find, that and the original BO Wave.

Keeper!

Super rare? You're kidding, right?  If that's the case it explains why I'm having such a hard time finding another example of one, and you're also not going to want to know what I just paid for it not 30 minutes ago!  lol

I can't believe I'm getting so lucky lately. I picked up a Kershaw A100 for 20 bucks a few months back not knowing what it was. That's the tool that lead me to find this forum.

What makes this little guy so rare?

AHB, thanks for showing yours. Nice pair! If it's not too much trouble to check your dates that would be great. I'm curious to know more about when these were made.

Is the sheath that I pictured the correct/original one that came with the tool?

edit.........okay, I just followed the link to the other thread and it looks like it is the correct sheath. I didn't get the original box though......very nice!!!

The BO makes it rare. Not many produced.

My hunt still goes on for an original BO Wave...then my BO collection will be complete.

Anywhere from $70-120, especially with the original sheath. Original box could be upwards to $200

Fellas, I don't think this thing is as rare as I'm led to believe.

First off, it looks like plenty of the forum members own one or two examples.
Second, I have one in BO just fall into my hands for the price of a pack of cigarettes? I'm sorry but, I'm just not that lucky! lol
And lastly, David's got one from 95, and Poncho's got one dated 04. I doubt if this tool is rare if it was manufactured for at least 9 years, maybe more.

I see just about everything selling in the $70-100 price range. Schrade tough tools, buck tools, buck lights and minis, A100s, even original waves in unused condition. (and these are used examples, no original packaging)

It seems to me that sellers like to play on the discontinued point to get the price up close to a hundred bucks or more. But being discontinued doesn't make it rare. jmho  :)

Remember that we are a very small slice of the greater population and our knowledge has lead us to seek out such items :)

That being said...great find! The BO certainly makes it the business!

Just cause we have them with such different dates doesn't mean that there were many made ;)  I have looked on Ebay many a night for another (for the right price of course) and have seen very few of these ever on there  :pok: :D  That being said you don't see many of the SS version either :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :D

Well, now that I know what it is, I'm definitely going to keep my eyes peeled for some other examples.
There's several flee markets within 30 miles of me that have always seemed to be gold mines for knives, MTs, new and old tools of all sorts, and old, hard to find fishing gear.

I'm almost positive I've seen a few of these in the recent past but passed them by as I'm not a big fan of key chain sized MTs. I'm definitely going to take better notice when I'm out there this weekend!

Thank you all very much for the input. Happy hunting!  :tu:
