Anyone here still use an Avometer?
on: February 25, 2008, 12:35:19 AM
Back when I was training for a career in electronics, I was trained by a few guys that had been in the trade for many years and who were not really up to speed with modern test equipment and tools.  Because of this I was taught how to test everything with an Avo which is a large brown analogue multimeter made of bakelite.

A few months into my training I was lucky enough to be given an old beaten up MKII Avo 8 which was marked as being made at some point in the 70's.  It was pretty bashed up and had the glass lens broken but the works were still pretty accurate considering that it had not been calibrated for many years.  I loved this meter and even though it was huge and very heavy, I carried it with me for the whole time that I worked as a service engineer for audio and visual equipment and I still use it to this day.  I guess you just get used to these things when you use them very often.

So does anyone here own an Avo? Or have they all been discarded and replaced with the more modern, and admittedly more accurate, digital multimeters?

I've never heard of one.

At home, I still use an old Radio Shack analog multimeter though.  I normally don't need better accuracy than it provides.

Here's the MKII that I have http://www.richardsradios.co.uk/avo8.html

They do still make them, but due to their size I have not ever really heard of anyone using one.

Wow, that looks like something you'd pick up in Fallout.

I think the British term "AVO meter" means Amps Volts Ohms meter.  Translated into American, it means multimeter.    :D

I have a solid state RCA Master Voltohmyst analog meter in addition to more modern, digital multimeters.

You are correct it does stand for that.  :)  But Avo is an actual brand name and the Avometer model 8 is a meter that has been made for well over 50 years.

My analog looks about 40 years newer than that.  :P

So we are refering to just one and the same thing having two different names!

No, a multimeter is a multimeter and an Avometer is a meter made by the company Avo that just happens to stand for Amps, volts and ohms.  It is a type of analog meter that has been made for over 50 years.  The company makes lots of test equipment but is mainly known by the model 8 multimeter known as the Avometer model 8.  The company site is here http://www.avointl.com/.

Perhaps the Avometer was mainly used and sold in the UK?
