Batonning with a 91mm
on: August 11, 2012, 11:04:14 PM
Just come back from a week's camping and happy to say the huntsman performed excellently opening tins, bottles, packaging as you'd expect.

We also had a fire pit but the supplied wood was far too thick to use, so I had to split it. Managed to baton a roughly 2 inch thick piece into smaller segments with the 91mm main blade. The larger, 6-inch thick chunks I couldn't manage to baton unfortunately, but I was still very impressed with how well it coped.

Just wanted to share that. I wouldn't recommend relying on it, but it is possible for smaller chunks of wood.

There's an old trick for spliting wood with a SAK. You saw a groove into the block of wood as if you're trying to saw through the branch, hit the wood against something hard and the wood brakes/splits. I'll to get some forest time tommorow if my thumb feels better and try to make a video of it.

Yup that works.  I saw mr Ray Mears do that one too.  ;)

yeah. The only tricky part was that the knife didn't stay open while I tapped it, it tried to close. But so long as you're aware of that it's OK.

I'd like to see that if you can manage to video it, sounds like a useful tip!

I actually first saw it done by this guy, Gene Ward. I like the fact he's using a SAK and a Wave instaid of some fancy "survival" knife.

Good Video I've been thinking about hetting his DVD, I think I will now.  Crazy that he passed away from Cancer, but he sure did a lot of good before he left.

Watching that video reminded me of the great old .

That's cool but also weird since its a pocket knife and not a camp knife. :tu:

I have certainly managed some light battoning with a 91mm SAK before with no ill effect. :)
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Try keeping the tip of the blade lower then the handle, or horizontal. (stress on the tang)
