My works
on: September 04, 2012, 08:03:53 PM
From time to time i make some handles and sheaths for mostly Scandinavian blades. The blades are cheap one because I'm still learning.Few month ago I ordered two hand forged Terra Tiamantti  blades from finish blacksmith Antti Mäkinen, grandson of Yrjö Puronvarrsi, but don't feel confident to put handles on them yet.

I'll put pictures of the knives and short description, and will update it when there is something new.

The firs knife is Kankaanpaa Saami. The handle is made of maple wood and birch bark.

I sold this knife on a charity auction.

I decided to made a carving knife because I love to carve spoons, so I choose Mora 60 laminated blade. The handle shape is traditional, and the wood is maple.

A friend of mine liked the knife and i gifted it to him.

A while after I made another one with the same blade and shape.

But this time there is something like Saami sheath :) It is half wood, half leather.

The little Lauri 42SS was already shown in another thread but I think, that it belongs here :)

I made it a simple leather sheath and it become very practical neck knife

:o  Yes that is beautiful

Just out of curiosity do the birch bark discs get glued on when you put the knife together or does the 'butt' (if that's the right word) hold it altogether?

The "big" brother - Lauri 63SS. For the handle I used the same rotten oak that I used on Lauri 42.

I already sold this knife.

Beautiful work! Aside from the gorgeous knives, I love the simplicity of the last sheath you made.

Thanks :) I'm trying to do my best.

As magentus mention simple sheaths here is one that I made for Alox Classic and gifted the knife to a friend:

They are glued - I put little Epoxy on the ceter of the disks.

While looking for pics of Buck knives for another tread I run over this:

Sheath for Buck 525 Gent, shaped around the knife, and the first letter of my girlfriend's name embossed.

After a long delay it is time to show you a new knife.
The blade is Saami 105. For the handle i used birch bark and walnut. The handle isn't finished - needs more sanding and I have to repair a hidden defect.

For now - enjoy the pics :)

i feel kinda daft for asking, but bear with me, how is the handle done like that? isn't rotten oak very soft?

The wood is very soft. I put few coats of superglue and sand them up to 2000. For small handles like this it is more than enough.

it's gorgeous.

admittedly i wouldn't have the faintest clue how to replicate if someone forced me to at gun point but that only adds to the appeal.

the link in your sig doesn't seem to be working correctly

thanks

thank you again for the pictures and great work!

Couple of skandi knives.
One is with zone tempered Lauri PT95 blade and handle of birch bark and colored burl maple.

The other is kind of puukko with Lauri 125 blade. I tried to make the handle as traditional as I can.

I must say those Lauri blades are excellent and affordable as well.  :tu:
Years ago I've build a couple bushcraft puukko's with the diff.tempered Lauri PT77 blades (Hrc 63),
(fully reprofiled and convexed the blades, took ages by hand).
