How about you, do you pickup the ugly stuff when you shoot?

Nice photos :)  I've never been good with photography after dark.

I once tried to take some night shots of F-18 Hornets doing practice take-offs with afterburners, back when I lived on the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in Orange County, CA(1988-89).  I had walked to the top of a hill next to the on base housing area that was 'technically' a restricted area, although not fenced in.  I had often seen Marine kids playing around and riding their bikes up there during the day, so I thought nothing of it to get a good view of the runway, besides I avoided the fenced in communications equipment that did have 'USE OF DEADLY FORCE AUTHORIZED' signs posted.

I was a bit surprised when a Marine MP came up behind me with firearm drawn and hollering for me to drop the camera and show him my hands.  I froze and did not immediately lower my Canon 35mm with telephoto lens, because I couldn't hear what he was saying with the jet noise, but quickly got the drift, lol.. :ahhh

After they ID'd me and confirmed my dad was a U.S. Army officer on the base, I was given a warning and they drove me to our quarters, not even taking the film from my camera.  After developing, the photos were terrible anyway... :(

Great shots Eddie!¡! I really need a lens like that to do night/ dark exposures. The fastest lens in my bag though is a f/ 3.5, way too slow to get good freehand dark shots as crisp as yours.

I did a shoot a couple years back of the Ft Hood welcome sign when it was new and had a similar experience with military police. I was shooting for a DOD photo contest and wanted to get long exposure shots of the sign and traffic streaking by as Soldiers were driving in to work early in the morning. My guess is that someone driving by saw me shooting an told the guards at the gate that someone was taking pictures and the MPs came screaming my way. No guns drawn but they did want to see my camera and look at the images I was taking. I explained what I was doing there taking pictures at 530 am and they were ok with it and advised me to go to the force protection office on post and get a memo stating that it was ok for me to be taking "random" pictures on the post. I asked the MP what they do about people taking pictures elsewhere on post an he told me that I shouldn't worry about that and to mind my own business. Mind you, that I'm a Soldier stationed on Ft Hood at that time and I was working for the Sentinel (our installation newspaper) as a staff photographer. I told the editor what happened and he dealt with it.  It also happened to me again when doing an article for the paper. I was standing in front of a shoppette (a convenience store on post) asking random people to answer questions for the article and I would take their picture for the article and publish (with their permission, of course) it in the paper. Well, to my surprise, a DOD police officer came up to me and asked what I was doing and I explained it all to him. I had credentials from my office showing that I was, in fact, an employee of the installation newspaper and a Soldier. Again, he told me that I would need to get a memo from that office. My boss was furious by now as he went to the installation provost marshal's office this time and gave them an earful about their harrassment.
