Anyone get a Solarforce P1?
on: November 03, 2012, 07:14:04 PM
I'm looking very seriously at this host as a bike light.  The GFRP casing it has saves a lot of weight; about 93 grams for an L2, compared to about 67 for the P1.  Perhaps not a lot, but I'll be helmet mounting it, so the weight difference will be quite noticeable.

Anyway, if anyone has one, could you let me know kind of drop-in you have in it, and how it's worked out for you so far?  I'm planning on putting a Nailbender HCRI XML in it.

I don't know if a XM-L would work good considering the heat issue. As long as you don't run it until it melts then you should be fine :)
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Thanks Steve!   :tu:

I poked around there and read a few reviews of it.  It seems to sink heat pretty well even with the polymer superstructure on it.  I've got to save my pennies for it and a module first, but I want to get one of the new HCRI XML modules that Nailbender is making...  From their specs, 500 lumens OTF on max, I'm wondering if it's slightly under-driven.

Even if not, I'm planning on mounting it on my bike helmet for night time riding duty, so it'll be getting plenty of air flow for cooling, and I doubt I'll have much need to run it on high.  I'm thinking the medium setting should be plenty of light for most of my night cycling needs.  I'm planning on getting the 5 mode model, as I've found a strobe setting very handy for cycling.

At 500 lumens it is underdriven. The XML can go as high as 3200 mA so that would be around 1100 lumens but better safe than sorry.

Thanks Steve, I had a feeling that was the case.  It sounds like it should only be pulling about 1.5A at the tailcap; that shouldn't be any problem for a AW P18650 then.

Sounds like it'll work as a bike light w/o any problems.   :tu:
