pretty darn impressed by 58mm phillips driver...
on: November 10, 2012, 05:10:47 PM
not just on small screws but larger ones too.

one of my pet peeves is loose door handles, and i'm constantly re-tightening handles at friends and family as well at work.

last couple of days ive been using the rambler phillips to do it instead of the phillips driver on my 91mm custom SAK.

it works great!  i even tried on a larger bolts of deadbolts and it works.

i know ramblers get props around here....add me to the list!

still not gaga about the 58mm blades, just too thin and small for me but i don't use the blade all that often on any of my saks, carrying a utility knife for work (construction, maintenance, handyman)

I'm a fan of it too. I disasembled my laptop with a rambler a few months ago. Worked great. :tu: One day I hope to get a Drifter. It's the only keychain SAK that could replace the Rambler on my keychain.

I am not impressed by the Philips driver on my 09 solider. I used it while mounting a IKEA table and the driver got lot of dents....(If you know what I mean)  :ahhh

I'm glad I read this; I've entertained the thought of getting a Rambler as an EDC for urban environments.

yes its either inline or nothing for me, I don't find the rear layer phillips very useful at all, esp for my pet peeve of tightening door handles (where access is a issue)

yes it's a great knife, the phillips is magnetized too, useful for those tiny screws

Yeah, this is one of the issues that make me prefer the Spartan/Climber type knives over the Tinker series. I mean, the small can opener screwdriver can be used on Phillips screws as well, the only issue being you can't overtorque it as much as a true Phillips head S/D... but that's why you get an Explorer, which has a true Phillips head S/D, and it's in-line. :D

Yeah, I read that it's magnetized, too. I guess that helps!

spartan lite also has one.

i wish they still made the scientist and yeoman.

the phillips is probably my most used tool on a sak

Ah, yes, the Spartan lite... too bad that model isn't easily available where I live!

I wonder if I can find some Yeoman or Scientist around here... probably all sold out.

I just started carrying an alox classic on my keys.  Now that I'm used to it, I'd love an alox rambler so I could have the philips.  Too bad they're a swissbianco limited thing for stupid money

Another big fan of the 58mm combo tool here. The Phillips is just a very handy size and much more capable than it might first appear. :tu:

I've long held that the 58mm SAK's are the unsung hero's of Sakdom. So darn handy to have, and small enough t always have on hand. They will handle most everything you run into in the great suburban/urban wilderness most of us live in.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Yup, very useful tool.

I think it's time Vic made the 58mm Alox Rambler a standard product offering at around the $20 price point.

It's time they design 58mm Alox scales that can have the pen and other tools as well.

amazon has the rambler for $22.73.  I realize people outside the country might not see that price...

I realized i also have a couple rovers, which has a flat screwdriver on the tip instead of phillips, not quite as useful as the rambler has flat driver on file and rover has no scissors.

I wouldn't limit this on the 58mm range. I think the Rambler has the best tool combination of all SAKs. And that's exactly why I edc one along with the scissored Cadet.

Love it!

The Rambler is in my top 3. I love the Phillips as it takes the case screws out of my Timex for battery replacement.

I have a Rambler, and in general, I like it, but I read this thread, and had some serious doubts. So, then I tried the little phillips on a full size phillips screw in a door hinge. It's better than most cheap full size MTs. I'm impressed. I don't think it'd handle heavy tasks, but it's good to know it'll do light-weight full-size tasks.

I like the philips for smaller screws, though not so much for larger ones.
I was impressed by the seemingly useless flat one, on the file, today.
I had to use it on a large screw and it tightened it fine, no bending or breaking.
