Cell phone size
on: December 19, 2012, 03:13:21 PM
I read an article yesterday that said a 5" screen will be sort of the new norm in cell phone size next year with the Android models. I have an S3 and like it but don't necessarily know how much bigger I would want to go. It 'just' fits in the chest pocket of my winter jacket.

Just got a S3 mini. The normal one was already to big for my taste. Even the mini is not that mini!

I dislike touchscreens anyway, so well...  :D Though I guess my phone is a bit bigger than the average smartphone...

I thought the 4.3" screen on my Atrix was huge, and I suppose compared to my HTC Touch it is.... but you know, I could appreciate a bit more real estate.

I could definitely go for more space, my Motorola Defy is only 3.7 inch... I've been thinking about getting a new phone now that my contract permanence is up...

I think 5" is nice for smartphone, since it's essentially a mini computer so more real estate is nice to have, especially browsing webpages that aren't designed for phones. Try zoom in/out/scroll around on a page with flash content that also scrolls is impossible.

I could probably cope with 5", but am quite happy with an iPhone 4S at the moment. More folks are using them for multimedia and browsing etc, so it seems the increase in size is a popular one with consumers.

That one's been on my watch list since they announced it. :tu: I like Android but the range of smaller models is a bit lacking in function. The S3 is the only mini one to my knowledge that has a decent camera AND camera flash. (except the xperia mini which I currently have and keeps crashing on me ::) ) I could never bring myself to carry one of those pocket tablets.

I think there's a version of 7" galaxy tab outside North America that has full cell functionality, try hold up one of those to your head and walk down the street lol.

I have a Galaxy Note II and I'm pretty happy with it. I'm too old to do finger painting. It's huge, but it's really nice having a phone with a big enough screen that it's really not relevant whether a website has a mobile friendly version. It's actually made me drop a proper notebook and pencil from my EDC (for now, at least). Pencil and paper certainly have their advantages, but they weren't worth the weight for EDC anymore.

I carry a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket with 4.5" diagonal screen, and it rides in an Otterbox Defender case, which adds some serious bulk.  While its nice have the big screen when watching Youtube, I will downsize next time and get something a little smaller.  Its just dang big phone to be carrying around all day.  Mrs. Powernoodle's Galaxy S2 seems small in comparison to the big Skyrocket.   So there is a point of diminishing return when it comes to size, as easy of carry is also a major consideration.

Yeah, a case really bulks up a phone. I used to have a rubber case for my S2 but ditched it after getting an extended battery kit and just use it as is.

Uuups

My old one was dying slowly for the last six months. And after it crashed 5 times on Friday I couldn't stand it anymore. Sooo I got a new one. And the best price/specifications were in a 4" format. :D I'm still getting used to the size :ahhh Need to find a way to carry it. Here it is next to my old one. xperia X10 mini pro and Prestigio 4040.

Have a look at the new Sony Xperia Z:
5 in screen, yet only a tiny bit bigger than the s3 (same width and 3mm longer).
Its waterproof and got all the bells and whistles of a modern high-end smartphone.

I've got a selection of smart phones sitting here right now and I've got to say once you get used to the size of the Note 2 it's a brilliant bit of kit and the screen is just great for web browsing, YouTube etc etc.

In terms quality and build, I rather like the HTC devices. I think the One X is a great compromise between the small iphone screens and the note size.

When I got my HTC Desire HD over a year ago, it was about the biggest screen size out there at the time. Not so much anymore, the bigger screens are getting more popular.  I still find it a very capable smartphone, and I don't see a need to upgrade it any time soon.

my preference for phone screen size is somewhere around 4" max. if i need a larger screen, i'd use a tablet instead.
