Awl in place of nail file on cadet
on: December 12, 2012, 07:22:29 PM
Does anyone know if the awl can replace the nail file on a cadet?  Also wondering if the samll blade could replace the same as a direct fit.

Thank you

Sph007 did a replacement. It's in his thread. Looks very good.

Yep, it's doable but a pain.

I have pictures here of what I did.

I prefer the nail file IMO.

+1  :tu:  Nail file gets used a couple of times a day (I seem to accumulate  gunge under my nails very easily and it looks gross) but the awl would get used once in a blue moon.

Having said that, I have used the awl on my SI as a nail cleaner...

Anyway, it's horses for courses. Nobody can tell you what tools should be on your ideal SAK

Why not keeping both? That probably means adding a nail file (plus one more short tool, a pruner perhaps) to a Pioneer. That should be easier, although thicker.

If you're only after a light-weight awl you could do this... (from the mini-farmer thread)

Making an awl from the nail file.

(Image removed from quote.)

Removing much metal with the wannabe dremel to give the basic shape of the awl.

Filing

(Image removed from quote.)

Sharpening with a DC4

This is it. A combo awl / nail file.

Yeah, that is a pretty neat way to make have an additional multitool.  Thanks to your Wenger technique, I will be rocking a minifarmer plus scissors soon enough!  No need to break down 2 rare Vics either!

Cheers
