93mm Alox Dilemma
on: December 26, 2012, 08:04:15 PM
Ok, so i have a "luxury problem".

I acquired 3 Alox Soldiers in the last months.

1. 97 standard silver Vic Soldier, very good condition, a rooster etched on the Main blade
2. 90 Dutch Army Knife, used, but good condition,non-polished tools, marked KL-90
3. 76 red Alox Vic Soldier, WK stamp, hollow rivet, blade ground to hell, tip of Awl is broken off

My problem is as follows:

I really like the well worn scales of the `76 soldier, but I´d like a fully functional knife.

I am thinking about getting some pivots and screws from Syph, dismantle the ´76 and one of te other ones and combine good tools with well worn scales.

Which knife should i dismantle, am i destroying any collectors value? Should i stopp whining and use one of the good knifes?

Any ideas?

Pics to follow.

Or you could look around for a bargain price on a new or VGC Pioneer and use that as a donor.

Or see if Syph has a "spare" blade for sale when you get the picots.

I'm sure there are other ways of tackling the "problem",  other brains might pick up a few more.

We have kinda "special" problems here on MTO, don´t we?
Thanks for your thoughts.
I think I´ll find a solution.

Send in the 76 for repairs I say. The pivots Syph uses require a great deal of precision drilling which may or may not be easy to pull off.

You would lose the dated blade though, but it sounds like it is already spent.
Lurking with a large collection of sharp knives!

I am still not sure what to do.

While sending in the `76 will surely bring back a fully useable knife, i am tempted to try my hands at dismantling and putting together an alox myself.

Those are the candidates.
