Or more accurately, the cause of Def's new head injury!

When the kids were young (but not TOO little), we'd chain the sled to the back of the tractor and tow them around the fields.  When they were a little older, we chained to the back of the Land-Rover and towed it up through town and back.

Once, right after a huge dump, the roads weren't plowed and we were running up and down the main road.  This old crotchety dude came out and yelled, "I'm gonna call the police!"

I yelled back, "You just do that.  I'm sure they have NOTHING better to do today than hassle a guy pulling his kids on a sled."

As I was reading that I was thinking "there's no way you'd be allowed to do that today!"

I think of a lot of the things we used to do and how horrified people would be to see that today- things like riding in the back of a pick up truck or jumping my bike over things without so much as a helmet.

But don't get me started on how overly safe kids are nowadays.  This is way better than the ones I had as a kid since this one is likely to be alcohol powered....

Plus if we keep kids TOO safe, how does it give a chance for the dumb ones to learn valuable lessons!

I used to get pulled on my snowboard behind the snowmobile through trails.  Im sure I could have got hurt, but I didnt, and damn thats fun.

Apparently the things my brother and I did when we were kids are far too dangerous for my nephews.  I am always amazed at how many things they aren't allowed to do or how much armor they need to wear to do them.

Of course, I don't have kids so I guess I just don't understand.

Back to my fun new ride, I can't wait to see the look on Daisy's face when I make it down the hill a lot faster than she can!   >:D

Probably the only thing I miss about living in the north is sledding.

It was too hot to have snow where I grew up (Mildura, Australia), but that didn't stop us from our warm-climate version of "sledding".  It was more like water-skiing.  My (older) brother had small two-stroke motorcycle, I had a rope tied onto a piece of plywood, and he'd tow me by riding along the bank of a nearby irrigation channel.

It was great fun, but every now and then I'd be unable to keep the corner of the "sled" away from the bank of the channel, it would dig into the dirt and pull the bike (and my brother) right into the channel.  Seeing as it was "my fault" I had to remove the spark plug, tip the bike upside down and crank on the starter pedal until no more water came out of th engine.  I got pretty good at it as it happened rather a lot (I tried my best, but didn't have very good control over the sled).

Probably considered way too dangerous these days: motorbikes, ropes, water etc etc

At college upstate New York, we would take trays from the dining hall and sled down this huge hill behind the music building.  One day when I was on duty with the local ambulance, we got a call for a sledding injury.  A guy had crashed directly into the football field scoreboard, which was at the base of this hill.  A compound fracture of the femur, very messy.  :ahhh  That was the first and last time I had to use a traction splint on a live patient.  A lot of peoples' enthusiasm for  sledding that hill was dampened by that injury.....

I wish I lived in a place that was warm year round- I am a real summer person and not a huge fan of winter.  I only got a sled because it was cheap and there's a great hill right across the road from my house, which means I can go out, take a couple of runs down the hill then come in and warm up again.

I tried the sled out last night and ended up running out of hill and continuing out onto the road.  I gouged up the bottom of the sled a bit, but it was all part of the fun!  :D

Today my friend Frank came out with his twin daughters and we went sledding.  There still isn't a lot of snow, and probably not really enough to actually slide on properly but we still managed to pick up some good speed a number of times before coming back to the house for some hot chocolate.  Daisy was there too and she had a great time chasing the sled!

I'd actually mounted my GoPro to the front of the sled my first time down but the hill was pretty rough because of the lack of snow and the GoPro fell off just before I broke the sound barrier.  At almost super sonic speeds I watched as it bounced away in slow motion- so hard in fact that it knocked the memory card loose and changed the mode on it.

It was a lot of fun!

We use to tied a car hood behind the truck or tractor and tear off up and down the roads and fields in the snow. Great good fun was had by all!    :D

In reality it's far less dramatic , I spent 3 hours Christmas morning covered in mud rescuing two dogs over a cliff , but it was worth it.
