Are the the custom BM griptilians worth it?
on: December 26, 2012, 01:54:10 AM
i was thinking of getting myself something nice, but I wanted some opinions before i got it. just wondering if you were satisfied with what you paid to get it? Were you genuinely impressed with the quality in the long run? I just dont want to end up dissapointed on a $150 knife
here's a screenshot of the one I want to get:

P.S. I wanted to get it in s30v so overall cost will be $145

I'm interested in the same thing.  I spec'ed out almost the identical tanto bladed griptilian. I am interested if anyone has experience with these.

If you like the grip then yes its a good idea if you've never owned a grip I'd suggest looking at other folders in that price range.

I don't own this one but the BM stuff I own is excellent, especially anything with the Mel Pardue markings by them.

I looked at some spydies but none of them really did it for me, the one that i like http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=788 but $399 ( :( ) is way too much for me. can you recommend me some? I'm open to look at others P.S. I really like flippers and AO knives, but im open to any, if the quality is good

How about a spyderco para military 2. The brown g-10 one has s35v which in my opinion is better the s30v. S35v is the same steel my sebenza has. They are sometimes hard to find but I know where you can get one if you want. Around $150 and a much better knife imo and its made in Golden Colorado. I hate the cheap junk feel of the handles on the grip. I think for the price they could at least use g-10 or something......

I did  quick ebay search and found this one for $163 http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Spyderco-C81GPBN2-Paramilitary-2-S35VN-Plain-Edge-Brown-G-10-Handles-Sprint-/130823897720?pt=Collectible_Knives&hash=item1e75b64278 i really like the look of it  :tu:  two questions: And how is the blade shape for edc cutting (the tip looks a little fragile)? how is the deployment? I like it so i can just flick, not have to follow out with my finger.

It has become a favorite edc of mine. It flicks like a dream as most spydies do. It cuts like a razor. I've been nothing but impressed with mine.

Check newgraham.com first if you wanna buy it. They are awesome people and where I bought mine. Also if they are out check gpknives.com or knifecenter.com

I've had two minigrips and sold them both. They are okay knives, but for the material (hollow plastic handle) even the regular price is pushing it given the many fine choices from other makers, and they certainly aren't $150 knives.

If you really really love them, or have money burning a hole in your pocket go for it, but otherwise no. I'd rather spend the same money on something like this, but your taste may not be same as mine.

It looks  but I'd feel bad using it; it looks too nice. I like the look of collectors knives, but I use my knives... hard. Keep in mind, for me, $150 for one blade is a lot. thanks for the suggestion though  :)

If you are going to use a $150 grip, why not this one  :P Doesn't have to be this one obviously, just to demonstrate what you should expect from a $150 knife, which grips with a different colored handle isn't, lol.

I recently picked up a Benchmade Bone Collector Axis Mini.  It has the same basic blade shape as the Mini Griptitilian with the thumb hole.  However the blade steel is D2 and flat ground.  The grooved black and green G10 handle is grippy enough and the blade opens like a dream.  I first saw one at Bass Pro Shops for $124.95, which I thought was too much.  I was able to get mine for significantly less.

When I compared the Bone Collector Mini to a standard Mini Griptilian, I found that I prefer the Bone collector.  It feels larger and more secure in the hand.  I cosider it a small/medium size as opposed to a true mini.  The Mini Grip felt too small in my hand.

The Bone Collector is supposed to be my away from work knife.  I'm liking it so much that my Triage may lose some pocket time.

Considering the quality materials and price, I would recommend the Bone Collector Axis knives ahead of the Griptilians.

I looked at it on the BM site, I like the look, but I would really like it to be USA made, if possible. Even if it is up to BM QC standards. Thanks for the suggestion though  :)
P.S. I've been eying the mora clipper on EDCS

Unless I misread my knife, the Bone Collector Axis Mini is supposed to be USA made.

Not hijack the thread, but if you like the Mora, shoot me a PM and we might can make a deal.  I've  also got a Mini Griptilian listed. . .

Oh, on the BM website when you go to knives and safety cutters it doesn't say made in USA under the bone collecter knives, it must be because only some are USA made. I already ordered the spydie but maybe for my next folder I'll look at it. Thanks for your help guys : )
I'll send you a PM sometime tonight or tomorrow for the Mora
