What are the fasteners on the MP400 and how do you remove them?

I have a pair of Gerber MP400s here and wanted to swap some tools between them to make one really nice working user. One has the nicr knife blade but a broken small driver and it opening action is not nearly as nice as the one with the newer straight edge blade.

Just want to swap the knife between them but did not want to attack the fastenrs until I know just what they are. I am guessing threaded fasteners but with wacky heads to keep us do it yourself types from taking these apart. Any tips before I knacker up the heads?

The end protruding further is teh fixed end, the opposite one is teh screw head. The head sits in a shallow  2pool" on teh handle whose coutline you can see.

The screws are Loctited. Use some heating prior to disassembly.

You can unscrew them easier wheen you push teh locktabs aside.

I used to use Another Gerber Plier to unscrew them, if you have two, you can use the handle of the "leftofver one" to retighten the user.

I hope this helps.

You'll see that one end is actually sitting in a shaped 'cut out' in the handle so there is no need to grip that end.  The other end will unscrew reasonably easily but as Lowtech says a little heat will soften up the loctite, and pulling back on the black plastic lock release will give you a bit more room to work in (and be careful not to melt them if you heat up the pivot head ;)).  Personally I used a small pair of Vice grips to turn mine and it worked fine, even without heating the pivot.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Thanks guys. I may try this out and see how it goes. I don't want mar up the fasteners though so may just live with how they came and sell the one I don't want.

I am more a fan of Leathermans but really wanted one handed opening pliers just for the fiddle factor. Not sure I like the Leatherman OHT.  I actually got one at Christmas but just thought it looked too bulky so never opened the clamshell and sold it on ebay.

The Gerber is a cool operating tool but seems a little loose becuase of the unique opening design.

I liked the mp400 for a edc, traded up for a swiss tool which is a whole another class. I sure do miss that mp400 though.
