EDC Lubricant?
on: March 04, 2014, 05:42:54 PM
Not the kind you guys are thinking! Does anyone carry a small amount of lubricant, for bikes or other machines and what not, with them in their EDC or work carry? If so, how do you do it?

When I cycled I had 3and1 oil in my pannier in a zip lock.  I have seen the WD40 pens and some cool straw mods to carry lubricants.  I'd probably opt for a small bottle or precession pen type dispenser.

Thanks, I was looking at the pen style ones which prompted me to ask. How did the 3in1 work for the bike?

It's a good general product same with WD40.  I preferred a synthetic ptfe lube when really giving the bike a thorough cleaning a lubrication.  When I rode I cleaned and lubed my drive chain plus hubs often as this was my main mode or transportation and recreation.  The pen type deposit a small amount of lube and the precision one even smaller so depending on your application needs these may or may not work.  If you ride with a small pack on the bike then 3and1 is good enough for most applications.

Just a backpack, was going for the cool cruiser look so this ride didn't get a saddlebag, or gears for that matter . Worried about it breaking open in my bag which is shared with textbooks and a laptop that sort of need to remain unoiled....

I usually go with triflow, but wasn't sure if the little bottle would last in the bag.

I also worried about it as well as my backpack also carried school items when I rode.  I also rode a motorcycle and had a tank bag with some tools and such but oil or the like was always kept in a ziplock type bag or 2.  I think the little dropper bottle will be ok in a ziplock or 2.  Maybe a small tupperware type container?? They have some small ones and put the triflow in a ziploc then tupperware?? Just an idea.

I do have a precession oil pen but I don't know if it would be suitable for bike work?
WD40 also do a tiny tin but I've always used engine oil on bikes
How about refilling an empty Lighter fluid tin with 3in1 or engine oil (robust tin with sealing spout)

Those are good ideas Sparky, I'm leaning towards the WD40 pen applicators.

This isn't going to be what I use permanently on the bikes, I have real chain lubricant. But it would be nice to have something to throw on there if it is feeling a bit rough during the ride, or if I had to commute in bad weather or on salty roads.
Proactively I guess.

Says they are leak-proof, which I know isn't crack-proof, but it is still good to know it won't leak on its own.

Who is this Def character you speak of? Never heard of him

We've been using a chain lube as a general go to squirty oil on the farm.

It's cheap, and according to the blurb has "excellent penetrating and lubrication properties" which is about all you can really ask for!

If we are talking about repurposed lighter fluid canisters what about:

or a cheaper alternative:

I am actually considering doing a limited run of these, just for the fun of it.  I have 20-30 bottles, labels made up etc...

I carry one of the little fish-shaped soy sauce bottles - the kind you get with takeaway sushi - filled with with chain oil in my bike toolkit.
