Oiling a handle (DIY recipe)
on: January 22, 2013, 03:56:23 PM
Collect pine pitch, pick the dry pieces. Get your camping stove outside, light it, pour 300 ml linseed oil in a small recipient, boil it, add 30% of dried pitch, heat until dissolved. Take care, the turpentine contained in it tends to burn well, that is why you do small amounts at a time. If a flame appears, blow it. Also, boiling oil is no good to the skin, so precautions are needed. The result is a darker amber linseed wit excellent grip and water proofing properties. :tu:

Wootz  :tu:

I use 50/50 Linseed oil and white spirit on everything here  :D

The white spirit helps it to soak in  ;)

Yes it does. I use genuine turpentine, from a bottle (I'm lazy). First coat 50% mixed with oil, next coats ever less diluted. Finish with bees wax.
But it's the resin that really gives a durable, grippy and waterproof surface. ;)

Interesting links Wootz  :salute:  I think I would get in all sorts of trouble with the mixing and boiling recipe

Maybe one day, I will keep a look out for some bees wax

You're name isn't Sparky for nuffin'  :D

Try the bees wax after oiling the wood. I really makes a difference. Rub it in with finest grade steelwool, let dry for couple minutes, and buff to shine. Apply some fresh wax every once in a while for mantainance.

Pics?  lol.  No matter how many times I plug it into the comp my 35mm just doesn't download any images!!!
Never really was much of a shutterbug, that's been the gfs dept (and she's not too thrilled with taking tool pics as she says I'm "playing with my tools" too often as it is).  lol.  Been meaning to grab one off Newegg, but always seem to spend the $ on something else first (ooooh, those new ergo-grip pliers look purdy, etc.).

rofl. Got back from doing just that and then read that, Sparky.  She's sleeping/snoring fitfully and now it's back to playing with myself, uhhh tool, I meant tools.

Much prefer 100% Pure Tung Oil, such as the oil I bought from Lombardi's Woodworking (Amazon marketplace).

Hairy-scary thigh in the pics, Wootzie...did Chewbacca help you with this?

I might use doghair filler as it seems to grow on my pants, carseats, bedspread...

As an autodidact (lurking around forums helps), writing english doesn't come natural to me,
and I often strugle not to look like a smurf. Never seem to find the right smiley. Sorry for that. Pictures work much better.  :D

Roger that, Sparky.   If you were born a Roman god, would you be able to resist fire's temptation or be the one tied to a rock who's liver was gettin nibbled on?  I'd say #2 for you (and me, too) :salute:

Anyone overly concerned with how you look on the outside very rarely has much on the inside.  I'm convinced Confucius would have said this, but I understand he didn't have a girlfriend telling him to take it easy at the buffet.

I'm still convinced my Levis are shrinking.  I'm NOT getting fat.  lol
