Style CS Bottle Opener Mod
on: January 04, 2013, 10:28:35 PM
I didn't want to resurrect a year-old thread, but I would love more info and help on doing what EvilOlivE did here in the old showing-off leatherman mods thread:

This is so small I was going to wait until I had something better and just include this but its really starting to turn into my favorite "mod" I've done to my Style CS.  The stock bottle opener works fine and all but the way it worked always kind of annoyed me.  I usually found myself tilting the bottle over a little and angling my wrist all weird just to have the clip shoot the cap across the floor   So I found myself shuffling through the kitchen draw all the time to find a real bottle opener even though I had my Style CS right in my pocket.

This was so easy, 15 seconds with a Dremel tool and this went from an OK bottle opener to my favorite bottle opener.  If you like openers that work this way by lifting up then this is too easy not to do.  And it still retains the original functionality so its hard to see a down side.

It's kind of hard to see exactly because of the extra layer I put on the back so I traced a line to show the cut better.  With a stock Style CS this would be even easier, I had to bend my clip a little to go around the bolt head.  I also trimmed back the top part that touches the top of the bottle cap but I don't think it was totally necessary.

Also, I just read the Style CS review on this site and I agree about the knife blade being a little hard to open because of the nail nick being too shallow and too far back.  Swapping it out for a blade from a squirt works a lot better.   :tu:

The mod seems pretty easy and simple yet utterly genius because it solves my main gripe with the Style, the awkward bottle opener. Any ideas on how I could do this without a dremel? If a dremel is necessary, I might have access to one in a few weeks, but have no experience whatsoever using it so any tips on what head to use and how to make the cut would be awesome.

I PM'd EvilOlivE asking for more pics of his mod, but I'm not sure if he's still around. Has anyone else done something similar?

The original author of the mod actually responded to my PM and was AWESOME about it, but any other tips or experiences/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Sorry i probably should have copied my PM into this thread.  Hope it helps  :tu:

I just removed the clip part and ground it out with a diamond bit that I had.  The stainless steel is pretty tough so a diamond bit would be best. I think I got mine in a cheap set of diamond dremel bits at Home Depot.  I would just make sure to use the right diameter bit, too large a diameter and it wont allow you to get the part that lifts the cap sharp enough to get underneath the cap.  The one I used was about 3.5mm in diameter. Clamping the style down in a vice while you're grinding it would be the safest way but I just held it in my hand and went really slow and carefully.   Take your time, keep the part cool by dipping into some water when its gets hot to the touch, and just cut a little at a time then stop and check it against a bottle until it fits just right.  Make sure not to grind too much or you'll cut into the holes for the spring clip.

You could probably do it with a small metal file too or even the little file from another leatherman if you really wanted to, it would just take a lot longer.

Yup, just did this.  Super quick & easy w/ a Dremmel.  Used a small cone bit.

It never made sense to me that the cap lifter didn't work this way in the first place. When I first got this thing I tried to use it that way and it didn't work.
