Help needed???
on: January 28, 2013, 12:26:53 PM
Hi i'm usually on the leatherman forum, but i need a new tool for work, where i'm going to be cutting barbed wire often and i need something that's going to be reliable, at the moment i use a surge but the wire cutters are losing their edge, and i don't need the knife blade as i carry a separate blade, i am asking for advice about the power lock's reliability and ease of exchanging the blade for scissors, thank you  :tu:

I use a powerlock for my handyman job and it's been my favourite mt for heavy duty work, the scissors are fiddly but it's doable  :tu: I've scissors instead of the village-cutter as found it not very handy, my ppp has some vic type scissors on it  :tu:

I don't know what barbed wire is like in the UK, but here in Oz I'd be looking at large sidecutters with a forged head, speSmurfpillst fencing pliers or small (but high quality) bolt-cutters for that sort of frequent heavy duty cutting.

Sometimes a dedicated tool is justified over the "Jack of all trades, master of none" capability of even the bigger multi-tools.  If you really want an MT have you looked at the LM SuperTool 300 so you can replace cutting blades as they wear out ?

The powerlock compound leverage would be an asset for cutting barbed wire, but if you do it alot I dont know how well the cutters would hold up.

If I had to cut alot of barbed wire I personally would grab a Knipex compact bolt cutter.

PM me or email sakmodder [at] gmail . com if you are looking for custom SAK work.

I would opt for a cordless cutting wheel.

Thanks for advice great as always, we usually do have dedicated cutters with us, but for the few occasions we don't i need something powerful to hand, a couple of years a go i smashed my right hand to pieces and because i'm right handed it sometimes gets painful putting too much pressure on it with my surge  :tu:
